  1. REPUBLIC OF MOÇAMBIQUEMINISTRY OF ENERGY ´Mozambique Mining and Energy Conference: Renewable Energy Options In Mozambique` Presentation by Marcelina Mataveia Head of Biomass Energy Department Maputo - Mozambique 19-20 of January, 2009

  2. Contents Introduction Renewable Energy Resourses and Potential Country Experiency on Renewable Energy Policy and Strategy for Renewable Energy New option for Research &Development on RE in Mozambique Challenges

  3. Introduction • The Renewable energy sources in now days represent one of the most important options to contribute in solving the worldwide energy supply to the customers. • As in man countries in world, Mozambique also is curing out some activities and feasibility studies on the renewable energy development, such as: PV systems, small hydropower development, biomass and wind power • In Mozambique, very few research as been done, due to the fact that this technologies it is still new one as in many countries of the world and the lack of funds as became one of the biggest issue. • One of the biggest challenge is to seek for a capacity building to curry out the over all feasibility studies in sustainable point of view

  4. Introduction (cont) • In Africa there is abundance of energy resources. However, most of these resources are currently either under-exploited or exported without benefiting the vast majority of Africa’s citizens; • Mozambique has a huge potential for RE development that can afford the energy needs, including the power supply for rural areas and biofuels. • The establishment of objective policy and strategy on renewable legal framework for RE, in Mozambique, enhance a sustainable use and development of renewable energy.

  5. Introduction(cont) • Geographical Location • Location: South-Eastern Africa; • Total area: 800,000 km2 and common border with 6 countries; • Coastline: 2,500 Km; • Population: 20 million (2007); • Only 8% of the population have access to electricity; • Privileged location within SADC regional market, a free trade area from 2008; • A significant number of infrastructures such as deep water ports, railways, roads and pipelines, are available to facilitate the import and export to the neighbouring countries

  6. Renewable Energy Resources and Potential HYDROPOWER • In general, the hydropower potential in Mozambique is about 12500 MW; • Only about 20% has been exploited; • More than 100 sites has been identified with satisfied energy potential to be exploited for small, medium and large scale hydropower plants. some of those sites are located in Manica, Zambezia, Niassa and Tete provinces.

  7. Renewable Energy Resources and Potential SOLAR • Mozambique due its geographical location is high solar radiation • Ongoing different projects of rural electrification to benefit sites far from the Mozambican electrical network where social infrastructures as schools, clinics, etc are priority

  8. Renewable Energy Resources and Potential WIND • The wind resources in Mozambique is significant. However, the available data shows that there are some sites where is recommended to develop deep research; • The strong wind blow during June to August and the most probable areas are located in the coastline and in the highland.

  9. Renewable Energy Resources and Potential BIOMASS • Mozambique has high potential of biomass resources; • About 80% of the population satisfy their energy needs in biomass; • The big challenge is to promote new technology for sustainable use and environmental protection.

  10. Country Experiency on Renewable Energy In all over the projects we are commited with: • crosscuts issues (Environmental, Gender, HIV); • colaborate with private sector • colaborate with research instituitions (Eduardo Mondlane University)

  11. Country Experiency on Renewable Energy Small Hydropower • Ongoing severall feasibility studies in Tete, Manica, Zambezia Provinces; • We have successful installed a 200 kW plant in Honde, Manica Province 11

  12. Country Experiency on Renewable Energy Solar Energy • Rural electrification which clinics and schools are the main target; 12

  13. Country Experiency on Renewable Energy • Water pumping systems For house holds in rural areas; 13

  14. Country Experiency on Renewable Energy Wind Energy • Water pumping system for households and irrigation in Homoine, Inhambane Province • Research under progress for on grid connection; data colected in two sites(Ponta de Ouro in Maputo province and Tofinho, in inhambane province) indicate in average 6-7 m/s. 14

  15. Country Experiency on Renewable Energy Biomass • Introduction of improved kilns for charcoal burners; • Reduction of forest resourses devastation around 25%.

  16. Country Experiency on Renewable Energy • Introduction of improved stoves for domestic and institutional use; • An efficiency of 60-70%; • Reduction of fuelwood consumption; • Money and time saving.

  17. Country Experiency on Renewable Energy BIOFUEL • Baseline study to formulate national biofuels strategy have been curried out. • Liquid(Biodiesel and Ethanol); • ECOMOZ project has installed a plant of biodiesel with a capacity of 40 Millions of liters per annum in Matola;

  18. Policy and Strategy for Renewable Energy • The policy and strategy for RE under development aims to: • increase the access to energy services, contributing to improving the living standards and fulfilling the programme for rural development. • Establish local capacity development on RE technology; • Create market for RE development; • Deployment of RE options; • Boost Research &Development on RE.

  19. New option for Research & Development on RE in Mozambique • Tidal energy; • Wave energy; • Ocean thermal energy; • Solar Thermal; • Landfill gas.

  20. Challenges The major challenges for renewable energy are as follows: • Research and Development Program on Renewable Energy; • Establishment of Renewable Energy Resources Database; • Policy and Strategy in place, in order to enabling legal framework establishment to promote implementation and RE development; • Local Development ; • Market Development.

  21. Challenges (cont) • Build an environment to engage academia and private sector in the RE programs; • Ensure the database creation to be available for the interested investors; • Define plans and programs for each promising renewable energy option.

  22. Challenges (cont) • The biggest key issue is to get funds to implement all those project ideas
