  12. Summit Youth Hockey Head Coaches Summer Meeting • Rule changes – Geoff Palmer

  13. Summit Youth Hockey Head Coaches Summer Meeting • American Development Model – How are we doing? • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSt4C23vdV8 • More practice time than games • Scale the playing surface • Design practice plans that target 50% participation time – hard! • Use small areas, the game takes place in 25% areas • 40+ players can practice together well • Muscle memory, 10,000 reps done correctly • “The largest Hockey county in the world is great • at producing mediocre players” • “our elite players just survived the system”

  14. Summit Youth Hockey Head Coaches Summer Meeting • American Development Model – How are we doing? • Look critically at every drill… • Ask yourself, “how many are skating, how many are standing? • Solutions • Smaller groups • Shorten the exercise • If its not working – STOP and move to something else • Assistants its your job to tell the HC if you see needs/ideas • Mites – OK • Squirts/PeeWees more focus this this year • Identify/address skating mechanics issues – use your asst. coaches!!!

  15. Practice Ice Utilization Station Example 2 on 2 Cross ice Corner to D, D to D, Shot w screen/tip Iron Cross w/puck 1 on 1 Down low Passing Circle - 6/group, rotate every 7-10 minutes = 30 players, + 2-4 goalies - Low wait times!

  16. Summit Youth Hockey Head Coaches Summer Meeting • Practice Focus items • ADM means high reps of skill development exercises • Strategies are useless if player can’t execute skills • Do skills with pucks • Evaluate every drill – count how many moving vs how many standing • If its not working – STOP and go to something else • 1:1 defensive skills is a key deficiency, spend time on this every practice • Use small games, 30 minutes every week • NOTE – Parents are educated • – they will compare your practice plans to others • Water bottles – must use them, no lines at drinking fountains • Pucks – practice pucks will be at the rink, in scorers booth • Ipads for video ! Get an asst coach proficient!

  17. Summer 2013 Parent Preseason meeting checklist

  18. Summit Youth Hockey Head Coaches Summer Meeting • On the bench – be prepared • Make Job responsibilities clear • O door coach, with line up card • D door coach, with line up card • Do you want a certain set of D behind a certain forward line? • Are you line matching? • Who will tend to issues, injuries, on the bench (taking attention away from game) • What players play on PP, PK? • Head coach is responsible for decisions • Tool Kit • Spare mouth guard • Skate stone • Screw driver • Spare parts for helmets, straps • Tape • Dry erase board, markers • Medical Kit • Shall we supply these? • Equipment • Pucks • Players bring water bottles!

  19. Summit Youth Hockey Head Coaches Summer Meeting • On the bench – Strategies • Line matching – your most powerful tool ! • Use in every game, don’t let it be by default • Head to head, ie 1 vs 1, 2 vs 2, 3 vs 3 • 2 vs 1, etc… • Checking line – (must practice this) • Shadow • Use when a single opponent player can dominate the game • You need to train your shadow players in practice • Must be a very disciplined player • Entire team must be aware, so the shadow can hit the ice every time the opponent does, • even on the fly! • 5. Have a back up for when the shadow is in the box • Trap • All players (Sq B on up) should know the basic concept • Do not use for a whole game, but it needs to be used sometimes • Checking line • Line gets stuck out for a long shift • Change the MOMENTUM • Short bench

  20. Summit Youth Hockey Head Coaches Summer Meeting • On the bench – Strategies • Tips • Research your opponent before the game, pointstreak • Guess what, the Captains are usually the best players • Pick out skill players during warm ups • Know the opponents goalie stats • You can cheat the “home - line change rules” • Opt to change lines early - for face offs in either end • If you have 3 lines, be sure they know the order might change Time out – huge momentum changer !!! - any game you loose, did you use your time out? - rule of thumb, anytime two quick goals are scored on us use it !

  21. Summer 2013 Game Systems, make it simple, fewer decisions in early season, consider your age group – but don’t underestimate them - a face off win in our zone ALWAYS goes behind the net and break out on the week side - a dump into our zone, ALWAYS goes to the weak side brake out - on a regroup the first option should D-D pass - in the offensive zone, moving the puck to the weak side is most always a smart move, Point shots from the middle are more effective - 2-3 Pinch - Torpedo ?

  22. Summer 2013 Got Hockey Sense? "A good hockey player plays where the puck is.A great hockey player plays where the puck is going to be."- Wayne Gretzky* The key to winning is in your head. If you’re ready, we’d like to help you hone your hockey instincts until the game lives inside you. The Hockey IntelliGym™ is a revolutionary, software-based training tool that helps players develop hockey sense – the perception and decision-making skills necessary to stay one step ahead of the puck and the game. Train Your Brain. Dominate the Ice.
