  2. Infinitives & Infinitive Phrases • What is it? • An infinitive is a verb form that uses the word to followed by the base form of a verb. It often functions as a noun, as a subject, or a direct object. It can also function as an adjective or adverb. When to is used as part of an infinitive, it is not a preposition. • What are some examples? • To fly has been a dream of humans since ancient times. (subject) • Most people like to sing. (direct object) • What is an infinitive phrase? • It is a group of words that include an infinitive and other words that complete its meaning. • Example: To keep one’s promise is a sign of good character. Practice Worksheet-pg. 175 #2-14 even

Appositives & Appositive Phrases • What is it? • An appositive is a noun placed next to another noun to identify it or add information about it. • Examples: My brother, Jean, will accompany me to the boat. • Appositive Phrase: a group of words that includes an appositive and other words that describe the appositive. Many are set off by commas. • Examples: RajiPabijan, a distinguished geologist, will speak at the Science Club meeting. Practice Worksheet-pg. 69 #2-16 even
