Journey to The Center of the Ring By: Carson Rommel
One Day Bobby and Joey were sitting in class, and they wondered what is underneath the ground they walked on?
Well luckily, Joey’s dad was a driller, so they stole one of his BIG drills and used it to see what was underneath and they saw hot lava. Just like in the movies!
Thrilled with they had found, they went and asked Bobby’s mom why there was lava underneath the ground. Bobby’s mom explained how there are giant plates that glide underneath the Earth’s surface. More interested now than ever, Joey didn’t hesitate to ask, “What do these plates do?” Bobby’s mom said, “They create ridges, mountains, and even VOLCANOES!”
That explains all that lava Bobby whispers to Joey. Bobby’s mom also says, “These plates also cause damage. They cause earthquakes, those are caused by a transform boundary.”
They start thinking about how all of this started. They decided they should go and sneak in to the science lab. Although they never get caught, they learn about how Alfred Weagner made the theory that all of the Earth’s continents were one large landmass. He called Pangea.
They also went on to learn about sea floor spreading and learned that over millions of years, the continents moved into the positions they are in today. They see this cool boat and Joey says, “Lets go play in it!” Bobby agrees and they decide to be as rowdy as possible and press the start button, and they were gone!
They realize later on they are in the middle of the Pacific ocean or “The Ring of Fire” They figure out that this is earthquake central. Plates collide here all the time creating places such as Japan, using Divergent and Convergent Boundaries.
They figure out how to get home, and they do. They tell their parents about what happened on this Saturday in California, not knowing that they were near one of the biggest transform boundaries. The San Andreas Fault. Joey and Bobby decide to never mess with science again. Until they had Mrs. Martin for eighth grade science after they moved to Texarkana!
