Daily Warm-UpAP Literature - Matteson Places in Literature… What does setting tell us? Why is imagery important?
Spend a few minutes thinking about a place that has moved you immensely. It must be a place that once made a strong impact on you: whether that be a negative or positive impact is your choice. Perhaps you are thinking about a childhood memory, a holiday or an everyday place that strikes a particular chord with you.
At the top of your paper… Make some detailed notes about the place: how it makes you feel; objective descriptions; memories, including all five senses; consider how the place is affected by the seasons.
Now, imagine the place as seen through the eyes of a character - not you - who arrives there for the first time. Write the scene of that character's arrival. It may be a character from East of Eden or something else you’ve read, or it may be a character you make up right now, but I want you to use this exercise to deepen your understanding of that person. Remember - the character's awareness of the location is key. 1st or 3rd Person is fine.
