  2. Unit 3: PoetryWhat Will I Learn During this Lesson? As a result of the lessons taught during this unit, you will be able to: • Identify types of figurative language. • Document examples of figurative language and poetic devices. • Interpret poetry using imagery, tone, mood, and word choice.

  3. Characteristics of Poetry • More figurative language focused • Stanzas • Rhythm/Rhyme/Repetition • Usually intended to be read aloud • Oftentimes compresses ideas

  4. Nothing Gold Can Stayby Robert Frost Nature's first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf's a flower; But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay.

  5. Poetic Vocabulary

  6. Tone Tone: Styleor manner or expression in speech or writing. Tone is the attitude adopted by the speaker to the listener. Some adjectives to describe TONE: Formal, informal, serious, humorous, funny, amused, angry, playful, neutral, satirical, gloomy, sad, cheerful, imploring, suspicious, witty, eerie, etc.

  7. Mood Mood: Atmosphere, state of mind. Creates a sense of expectation about what is to follow. Some adjectives to describe MOOD: Fictional, imaginary, fanciful, idealistic, romantic, realistic, optimistic, pessimistic, gloomy, mournful, sorrowful, etc.

  8. Imagery • Imagery:the use of words to create pictures in your mind. • Appeals to the five senses: smell, sight, hearing, taste and touch. • Details about smells, sounds, colors, and taste create strong images. • To create vivid images writers use figures of speech. The Five Senses

  9. Figurative Language • Figurative language: writing or speech not meant to be take literally. • Different types of figurative language include: • Alliteration • Onomatopoeia • Symbols • Hyperbole • Metaphors • Similes • Personification • Symbols

  10. Theme • After you’ve thought about ALL the poetic devices, you can develop a theme or the controlling idea of the poem. • What is the THEME of Robert Frost’s poem?

  11. Closure: Pair/Share: A Survey Do you enjoy reading and/or writing poetry? Why or why not?
