  1. Welcome to Back to School Night Ms. Turner 6th Grade Room 33

  2. Purpose • The purpose of Back to School Night is to give parents/guardians a brief overview of sixth grade and how it is run. • Scheduled conferences are available to discuss your child’s progress-see me or call (909) 484-5030 to schedule a conference.

  3. Expectations & Goals • Your students are here to learn, therefore we all have a responsibility in the outcome. • Your child needs to come to school on time, daily. • Your child needs to be prepared for the day by bringing all necessary supplies for the day. • Advise me if there is any reason your child might have a bad day so I can be prepared.

  4. Daily Schedule 8:30-9:00: Opening (roll, check in homework, daily skills practice) 9:00-9:48: Center 9:48-10:06: Recess 10:07-11:00: Language Arts 11:00-12:15: Math 12:15-1:00: Lunch 1:00-1:20: S.S.R 1:20-1:50: Spelling/Grammar 1:50-2:45: Science or Social Studies 2:45- 3:00: Planners, pack-up 3:00: Dismissal

  5. Special Schedules • 6th grade band • 6th grade P.E. 1-2 on Tuesdays. • Library and Computer Lab –Mondays @ 1:30pm • FUN FRIDAY, every other Friday in the afternoon.

  6. Attendance • It’s important to be here everyday. Students will have absent work on their desks the day they get back. Overall, students are to responsible for their missed work. • Tardy students must go directly to the office before coming to class. I submit attendance between 8:30 – 8:45.

  7. Home/School Connection • Phone calls will be returned within 24 hours. Please make sure to leave a number where you can be reached in the afternoon/evening. • Parent teacher conferences: November 6-9th, February 26th –March 1st. • Student Planner sent home daily. Planners to be signed by parent on Thursday night, and checked over the weekend. • Pink slips and green slips sent home to notify of missing homework or inappropriate behavior at school. • Corrected work will be sent home on Mondays. • Tests will be sent home once graded and will require a parent signature.

  8. Homework • Homework assignments are given Monday-Thursday and will usually include: math, spelling/grammar and possibly science, social studies and language arts. • Any unfinished class work is considered homework (usually all homework is started in class-or is unfinished class work. • Students are to read for 30 minutes each night. Reading out loud will help them to improve their fluency. • I am strict with homework. Students need to develop responsible homework habits now. • Homework should not be taking them longer than an hour. If it is taking them longer please let me know!

  9. Pink Slips • Pink slips will be given out when a student doesn’t have a piece of homework. • Student has to fill out the pink slip and describe what they missed, they need to get the top part signed and returned. • Student works on missing assignment during recess, but is given breaks for bathroom and snack. • Student gets a check mark on their FUN FRIDAY. • Late work will only be accepted after 2 weeks. See late work guidelines for grade.

  10. Student Planner • Each night your student will bring home their Student Planner. • Students are responsible for writing down their homework that evening. • Homework is written daily on the homework board for them to copy into their planners. • Please sign the planner every Thursday to ensure that they’re filling it out completely.

  11. Curriculum and Instruction • Topics of instruction/study are guided by the CA state content standards (see handouts) • Ongoing assessment and flexible grouping • District/State Testing in Language Arts and Math • Math facts-students need to know their 2’s through 12’s quickly. Please practice with them! • Projects and reports • Field Trips (6th camp & other possible outings) • GATE • Computers and the Internet • Accelerated Reader • Band

Grade Scale Exceeds grade level standards A+: 100-99% A: 98-93% A-: 92-90% B+: 89-87% B: 86-83% B-: 82-80% C+: 79-77% C: 76-73% C-: 72-70% D+: 69-67% D: 66-63% D-: 62-60% F: 59% and below Above grade level standards Meets grade level standards Below grade level standards Does not meet grade level standards

  13. Positive Reinforcement • Several different strategies will be used throughout the school year: • Praise • Raffle tickets/raffle • Table points

  14. Discipline • Behavior expectations: Class/school rules will be the basis for discipline • Students who do no meet or follow class expectations will receive the following consequences: • Verbal warning – for simple things like talking, or off task. • Green slip- note home to inform parents. Must be signed and returned by parents. • Time out • Call home • Principal referral • Please know that students will not have any consequence for green slips, other than getting the slip signed by a parent. • Students have FUN FRIDAY spelled out on their desks, and they get 9 chances to attend Fun Friday. They cross out a letter for every pink slip or green slip they get in a 2 week period. They only need to have one letter to still go out and play every other Friday.

  16. Safety Issues • All visitors must sign in and out of the office before coming on campus including before school. • School starts at 8:30 and students line up outside of my room at 8:15. Students dropped off before 8:15 am need to sit on the benches near the cafeteria. • Please always use crosswalks to cross the street. • Bike riders must have a school permit to ride their bikes to school. They must wear a helmet. • Children must be dressed properly to participate in our Physical Education program. Our PE day is Tuesday. Please send an appropriate pair of shoes to school with your child if necessary.

  17. Miscellaneous • Try to limit birthday treats to include healthy snacks for students. • Classroom donations are always graciously accepted (pencils, markers, erasers, small candy for prizes, popcorn, clorox wipes, tissues, hand soap/sanitizers, and anything else that you think is useful.)
