Caterpillar C13 Development Task ForceDecember 8, 2003 Items for discussion
ProposedScope • With the oversight of the HDEOCP, this task force will work toward the development of the Caterpillar C13 engine as a test tool to be used in measurement of engine oil performance against API CI-4, “Supplement 1” and PC-10. Progress will be reported, either directly or via the HDEOCP, to the API/EMA DEOAP.
Proposed Objectives • In the development process, maximize efforts to minimize the cost of the final test method. • Develop a 500 hour test method, using operating conditions specified by Caterpillar and refined by the pre-development group that shows discrimination and reproducibility. BY: March 31, 2004 • Develop additional precision data to support API CI-4. “Supplement 1” and prepare an ASTM Research Report on this work. BY: September 1, 2004 • Further develop the C13 test method for use in PC-10, investigating: CCV, ULSD and other test conditions as the task force may deem necessary. BY: December 31, 2004 • Prepare an ASTM Research Report, draft an ASTM Standard for advancement to a Facilitator, recommend the formation of a surveillance panel and recommend the dissolution of the task force. BY: June 2005
Task Force StructurePre-development task group • Caterpillar, PerkinElmer and SwRI. Membership limited by confidentiality agreements and pre-task force contractual agreements. • Did initial screening with the C12 engine. • Currently working to validate test conditions that will show discrimination between a CI-4 oil formulated to replicate problems encountered in the lab and the field and a CI-4 oil formulated to alleviate those problems. Data will be held within the pre-development group until released by Caterpillar. • Target for completion of this work is early February, 2004.
Task Force Structure (cont’d)Development Task Force • Longer term effort for CI-4, “Supplement 1” and PC-10 • Caterpillar • Abdul Cassim: to provide Caterpillar input on test conditions, experimental test design and contact with potential reference oil suppliers • Chuck Dutart: to provide Caterpillar input on C13 parts, special stand hardware, engine reference materials and mechanical/electronic training and guidance. • Industry expertise • Testing laboratories with future C13 testing capacity • Engine oil formulation and testing experience • TMC – Jeff Clark: to provide a repository for and analysis of “reference oil” data from the task force work. • Chairman: to provide “ASTM” guidance, report to the HDEOCP and develop the initial procedure draft.
