What is the e-plan? In response to reforms in the Code of Practice (implementation Sept. 2014), Action For Kids has developeda digital version of the Education, Health and Care Plan. ThisE-Planwill be used by students to represent their views to professionals, influence decision-making processes and regain more control over life-defining choices. As a platform for self-representation theE-Plan will focus on the young person’s aspirations for education, employment and community engagement.TheE-Plan training programme includes multimedia activities designed to support students in making choices, recording their views and uploading materials onto their individual E-Plans. An E-Plantemplate will be provided to students and teachers, featuring the categories/subcategories relevant to the EHCP (see next page).

Activity 14 – Video whispers • Listen carefully to the story being told: • Pass the camera around the circle with everyone taking turns to repeat the story, trying to recall all the details • Watch the result once finished! Example whisper story (the more detail the better): It’s the story of Jack who lives in a little green house by the sea. He has 3 brothers, 5 cats and 2 dogs. Jack loves fishing and eating chips. One day Jack goes out sailing but doesn’t come back from sea. His 3 brothers, 5 cats and 2 dogs all go out to look for him only to find an empty boat. But it’s not long before the dog smells something: it’s Jack sharing his chips with the fish!
Activity 15 – Chain reaction • Someone tells the beginning of a story: • Pass the camera around and carry on the story as long as you can • Anyone in the circle can clap their hands at anytime to tell the person to stop and hand over the camera N.B. The same can be done with drawing: Trace the beginning of a drawing for example a head or the top of a tree, fold over your paper and pass it on to the classmate next to you. Carry on folding the paper, drawing and passing it around until there is no space left. Open it up and see the result!

Appendix 1.1 - Involving parents Parents can contribute to their child’s e-plan profile at any time. Family involvement is especially important when working with young people with PMLD and non-verbal communication. During the e-plan pilot phase, Action for Kids arranged for parents to produce videos with their child over the week end. We provided them with the following: • Instructions on what content to achieve • A camera with a charger • A camera guide (to adapt depending on camera model) (detailed print out provided on next page)
Appendix 1.2 - Instructions for parents How you can help: As a parent, you can help your child with completing an E-Plan by taking a camera home for the week-end and producing a short video about your family, your child’s friends outside of school and his/her leisure. Below a description of how you may be able to contribute: • Film a 1 minute video about family life, introducing family members, pets, your child’s favourite room and activities outside of school, and anything you think relevant; • Film a 1-2 minute video where each family member says something positive and/or shares a good memory about your child; • Film a 30 second to 1 minute video featuring the child’s friends (this friend can also be a family member) introducing themselves and saying something positive about your child. Using the camera: • Turn the camera on and off at the top of the device. • To record use the button at the centre of the dial button. • The first button from the top and below the screen changes the mode from photo to video so make sure you are on the right setting. • The second button from the top is to watch the videos and photos you’ve already taken. • The third button from the top is to delete videos/ photos as you review them. • Do not worry about the Settings and Share buttons. • With regards memory space, you shouldn’t need to transfer any footage (the memory card is 16GB and we expect your videos to be no more than 2 minutes).
