The Forum • Center of Roman Public Life • Originally it was just marsh, but the Romans transformed it to be the center of their activity • Marketplace, business place, religious place and social place • Located in the valley between the Capitoline and Palatine Hills
Lapis Niger • “Black Stone” • Ancient shrine in the forum • Square pillar made of black marble • No one knows the significance of it but it was very sacred • oldest Latin inscription was written on it right to left and left to right • Meaning is hard to discover but it has something to do with a shrine to a king : Romulus
Umbilicus Urbis • “Belly Button of Rome” • Center of the city of Rome • Constructed around 2nd century BCE • Legend has it that Romulus dug a pit circular pit when he first founded Rome and the first fruit of the season was thrown into it and a handful of dirt to sacrifice • Thought to be the same thing as the Mundus: the umbilicus urbis was the external part • Remains of it is just some bricks 2 meters high and 4.45 meters in diameter
