Bowled Over A LITTLE HISTORY .... The revival of the Bowler hat has lead many to speculate the design and origin of this unique hard felt hat style so lets shed some light on the infamous Bowler hat, a style thats graced royality, equestrians, comedians and the stylish gentry through out history. History tells us the first bowler hat was designed in 1849 by the London hatmakers Thomas and William Bowler to fulfill an order placed by the firm of hatters Lock & Co. of St. James. This new style was commissioned by customer Edward Coke to who wanted a closefitting, lowcrowned hat to protect his Gamekeeper’s heads from lowhanging branches while on horseback. The keepers had previously worn Top Hats, which were easily knocked off and damaged. The Bowler hat soon became popular with property owners and consequently the gentry or welltodo in England. The Bowler got its name from Thomas and William Bowler, the hatmakers who produced Coke’s original prototype but it has also gone by the name Derby Hat in America becuase it was so popular with the wealthy at major horse racing events.

Both cowboys and railroad workers preferred the bowler shape over the cowboy or sombrero since it would not blow off easily in strong winds or when sticking one's head out the window of a speeding train! Both lawmen and outlaws wore the bowler including the infamous Butch Cassidy and Billy the Kid. In South America the bowler called a bombín in Spanish, has been embraced by women since the 1920's and worn by Bolivian Indians from Quechua and Aymata when it was introduced by British railway workers. For many years, a factory in Italy manufactured the hats for the Bolivian market, but they are now made locally.
