  1. Physique ALICE-MUON • premier papier ALICE-MUON • organisation des analyses • software • computing

  2. open heavy flavour x-section • unfold muon dN/dpt • extract d(b),(c)/dpt • J/ cross-section • di invariant mass • extract J/ signal (, d(N)/dpt,d) gigantic statistics expected “difficult” analysis but robust & well documented (UA1, CDF, D0, PHENIX) pp @ nominal luminosity: 80 seconds with trigger a few hours w/o trigger Options pour le premier papier de physique (pp @ 14 TeV)

  3. Leptons in PHENIX • Measurement of single electrons and implications for charm production in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s)=130 GeV, Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 192303 (2002) • J/Psi production in Au-Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV, Phys. Rev. C 69, 014901 (2004) • J/Psi production from proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 051802 (2004) • Centrality Dependence of Charm Production from a Measurement of Single Electrons in Au+Au Collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV, Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 032301 (2006) • Single Electrons from Heavy-Flavor Decays in p+p Collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV, Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 032001 (2006) • Measurement of high-p_T Single Electrons from Heavy-Flavor Decays in p+p Collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV, Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 252002 (2006) • Energy Loss and Flow of Heavy Quarks in Au+Au Collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV, Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 172301 (2007) • J/psi production versus transverse momentum and rapidity in p+p collisions at s**(1/2) = 200-GeV, Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 232002 (2007) • J/psi Production vs Centrality, Transverse Momentum, and Rapidity in Au+Au Collisions at s(NN)**(1/2) = 200-GeV, Phys. Rev. 4. Single  vs. di channels: pros & cons • single easier than di if identified particles i.e. electrons • alternative with single : blind analysis with tracking-trigger matching • most probably J/ paper comes first & single  paper shortly after other option: NIM-like paper on single  production to come before J/ paper

  6. Analysis model & to-do-list MUON analysis model • information available on the web • people assigned to each item • items treated according to priorities • to-do-list updated each ~2 months • progress regularly presented in offline weeks and PWG3 meetings

  7. Tasks for first paper (in progress) • task0: complete analysis framework • task1: alignment - tracking • task2: alignment - trigger • task3: list runs, detectors & channels for physics - tracking • task4: list runs, detectors & channels for physics - trigger • task5: efficiency from data - tracking • task6: efficiency from data - trigger • task7: full simulations with inputs from tasks1-5 (x-check tasks4-5) • task8: generation of plots (cf. muon analysis scheme) • task9: global normalization parameters (lum, trig eff, dscale, vxt…) • task10: manage muon productions

  8. Strategies for computing • alignment, calibration, reconst. & AOD prod. within ALICE computing model • final analyses can be done locally thanks to the small data volume nominal pp @ 14 TeV run: L = 3.1030 cm-2 s-1, t = 107 s sub-detectors: MUON, SPD, V0, FMD, ZDC, T0  full nominal pp run ~ 5 TB of AOD no need to use the grid for final analyses N. Bastid, MUON-PWG3 EVO meeting, June 08

  9. Conclusions • premiers papiers de physique avec ALICE-MUON définis • structure PWG3-MUON très dynamique et très efficace • la France y joue un rôle moteur
