What if this really happens…? An enormous volcanic eruption sends huge quantities of dust and ash into the atmosphere. On your sticky note, describe how this event will affect one of the following: 1. Plant life on Earth 2. Animal life on Earth 3. Human societies on Earth
http://www.teachersdomain.org/asset/tdc02_vid_photosynth/ PHOTOSYNTHESIS TODAY’S DATE:
PHOTOSYNTHESIS • Process that uses the sun’s energy to make glucose (a simple sugar) • Carried out by green plants and some bacteria
PLANT CELL • Yes cell wall • Yes chloroplasts • Larger vacuole • ANIMAL CELL • No Cell wall • No chloroplasts • Smaller vacuole
Photosynthesis takes place in an organelle called a CHLOROPLAST http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4mtsz_zoom-into-a-leaf_tech
Structure of a chloroplast: • Inner and outer membrane – surround the chloroplast • Stroma- the space inside • Thylakoids- sac-like membranes (like coins) where light-collecting takes place (think “thyla-coins”) • Granum- a stack of thylakoids • Chlorophyll- the main pigment in plants that captures sunlight
Which molecule in plant cells first captures the radiant energy from sunlight 1. Glucose 2. Carbon dioxide 3. Chlorophyll 4. Adenosine triphosphate
Photosynthesis has 2 stages: • 1. Light- Dependent Reactions • Happen in the thylakoids • Light and water enter the thylakoids • Photosystems move high-energy electrons through the membrane • Oxygen is produced • Also- • ADP is turned into ATP • NADP+ is turned into NADPH
J-TPS C 1. What is ATP? 2. Where do you get ATP? 3. What do your cells use it for? http://www.dnatube.com/video/5913/Light-Dependent-Reactions-during-photosyhnthesis
2. Calvin Cycle (Light-Independent Reactions) • Happens in the stroma • Carbon dioxide enters stroma • ATP and NADPH help to make glucose/sugars
The Overall Equation for Photosynthesis: Light energy + Carbon Dioxide + Water Sugars + Oxygen Light Energy + 6 CO2+ 6 H2O C6H12O6 + 6O2
Compare and Contrast Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration
What is the equation for Cellular Respiration? Glucose + Oxygen => Carbon Dioxide + water INOUT
