What’s up? • Currently, entire market is dictated by service providers • Shifting towards paradigm where providers just give you the connection • Cell-phones becoming more and more OS and computer-like because of shift • Moving towards greater support for 3rdparty applications
Some Basics • No industry definition for a “smartphone” • Most smartphones are mobile PC-like devices with the integrated features of cell phones • All phones are slowly becoming “smart” • Many corporations utilize smartphones to help keep employees better connected
Quick History • Smartphones (“phones that can do more”) started with the IBM Simon in 1992. • Simon had: calendar, address book, world clock, calculator, notepad, e-mail, and games • Nokia quickly began producing their own smartphones, the Nokia 9000 series
The BlackBerry • Started as a two-way pager • Made it big because of its stronge-mail application • Very handy calendar andaddress-book features • Development platform allowsfor countless other applications. • Over 8 million subscribers and17% market share.
iPhone (do uPhone?) • Essentially a mobile PC. • Runs an intuitive interfaceutilizing a touchscreen. • And yes, it can make calls too. • Development platform + ubiquity= lots of other applications • (gcc on iPhoneftw)
