2. Working with Pillar Open source by design, collaborative by nature We are currently working with a number of entities to deliver digital identity prototypes and pilot schemes. We collaborate with all stakeholders to determine the best solution for each context that: • Ensures regulatory compliance • Leverages standards developed in the digital identity space • Allows multiple providers to exist and function within the platform

The Identity Problem Personal Data Security Government Effectiveness Public Trust The individual has lost control over their data Uncertainty around privacy protections Operational inefficiency is costly Recent years have shown growing discontent over the misuse of personal data by large institutions, which threatens to undermine trust between citizens and public institutions. Perennial problems faced by large institutions include the inefficient use of resources, unreliable data, duplication of efforts, and inconvenient service delivery. The manual ID approach risks forged documentation. The automated approach risks a misuse of data. Username and password login mechanisms are insecure. The ultimate challenge for the state is to bring a better solution to its citizens by building a strong and trustworthy digital identification mechanism.

4. The Identity Solution Enrolment Identity is captured by government documents, validated by biometrics and digitally signed by the issuer. Credentials Own and control proof of identity. Everyday usage is simple with the Pillar Wallet’s Quick Connect feature. Storage Users store their digital credentials in a secure, encrypted decentralised storage area. The Pillar Wallet provides each citizens with a private and secure environment to store and use their digital identity. Citizens can use their wallet for everyday interactions with government and private sector services. Our solution comprises three parts:

Enrolment Identity is captured by government documents and validated by biometrics • The citizen scans the front and back of their ID, and the Pillar Wallet retrieves this information. • The citizen takes a ‘selfie’ and proves liveness to pass a likeness check. • The app securely sends the national ID card data to a government web service to verify and validate the ID. • The government web service creates a digital verifiable credential with a cryptographic signature and sends this to the citizen’s wallet app.

6. Credentials Own and control proof of identity. Everyday usage is simple with Quick Connect feature. • Citizens can easily access and interact with government and business services using their credentials to log into the service. • Upon login, the citizens scans the QR code on the government services website. • This will display the personal data that the website is requesting from the citizen. • The user explicitly consents to the release of that information before they are logged into the service. • Citizens can also display their credentials for authorities to view.

Storage Users store their digital credentials in a secure decentralised storage area • Users store their credentials in a decentralised personal storage area that they control. • The user is able to manage their identity and see a list of all documents they have validated with various service providers. • All data is encrypted, and the individual is the only one with a key to unlock it. • Citizens are able to restore data in the event that their device is lost or stolen.
