Background Information *OURTIME is a non-profit organization created during the 2004 presidential elections. *OURTIME dedicates it’s time to helping teenagers come to better understand politics by taking what is going on in the United States and putting it into words younger people can understand. *OURTIME has the mission of combining “the voting and purchasing power of young Americans so that politicians and businesses represent (the younger generation’s) needs better.”
What is the meaning of this ad? *By sewing her mouth shut, OUTIME is making the strong point that by not voting, you don’t get a say in how the government is run, and by not voting, you only hurt yourself.
Who is the intended audience? *The intended audience is younger voters and teenagers soon to turn 18. The ad is to get the younger generations interested in politics and what goes on in their county.

What is the first thing you noticed and what is your attention drawn to? *The first thing I noticed was the girl, because of the blank background, your eyes are drawn to her. Then once I noticed the girl, my eyes where drawn to the mask and nails going through the girls mouth.
If you remove the words, does it change the meaning? *If you remove the words, the picture could be about almost anything, ranging from abuse to an advertisement from the latest horror movie. With the words, it provides the audience with the photograph’s intended purpose, voting.

Pathos: What is the emotional appeal of this photograph? *The emotional appeal of this photograph is the sympathy for the girl and what has been done to her. Also, defiance can be provoked by the slogan, ‘Only you can silence yourself’.
