Our country • The Republic of Hungary(Magyar Köztársaság), is a landlocked country in the Carpathian Basin of Central Europe, bordered by Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, and Slovenia. • Its capital city is Budapest. Hungary is a member of OECD, NATO, EU, V4 and is a Schengen state. The official language is Hungarian, one of the few languages that are not of Indo-European origin. • The foundation of Hungary was laid in the late 9th century by the Hungarian ruler Árpád, whose great-grandson Stephen I was crowned as our first king in 1000. For centuries Hungary was regarded as one of the cultural centers of the Western world. At the end of World War I, Hungary lost over 70% of its territory, along with 3.3 million people of Hungarian ethnicity, under the Treaty of Trianon. In the Communist era (1947–1989) Hungary gained widespread international attention regarding the Revolution of 1956 and the seminal move of opening its border with Austria in 1989, thus accelerating the collapse of the Eastern Block. • The present form of government is a parliamentary republic (since 1989).

  3. Hungary is a popular tourist destination. The country is home to the largest thermal water cave system (Szemlőhegyi caves), the second largest thermal lake in the world (Lake Hévíz), the largest freshwater lake in Central Europe (Lake Balaton, also referred to as the Hungarian Sea), and the largest natural grasslands in Europe (Hortobágy). BUDAPEST • As the largest city of Hungary, Budapest serves as the country's principal political, cultural, commercial, industrial, and transportation center and is considered an important hub in Central Europe. • The population of Budapest is around 1.7 million. The city covers an area of 525 square kilometers (202.7 sq. miles). • Budapest is a single city occupying both banks of the river Danube. Pest and Buda are connected by 8 magnificent bridges. Landmarks of Budapest • Regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, Budapest boasts with a large number of historic buildings, monuments, squares, and natural attractions. • Our Parliament, built in the gothic revival style and completed in 1904,is the third largest parliament builiding in the world. One of our greatest national treasure, The Holy Crown is kept here. • Heroe’s Square is a major square in Budapest noted for its iconic statue complex featuring the sevenchieftains of the Magyars and other important nationalleaders.

  10. JászberényCultural and economic centre of theJászság region • Jászberény lies 80 kilometres south-east of Budapest on the banks of the River Zagyva. This region is a transition from the Great Hungarian Plain to the slopes of the Matra Mountains. • Jászberény, with its 28 thousand inhabitants, possesses unique geographical, ethnical and historical features. • The surrounding countryside has preserved its untouched, romantic feel. The Hajta-marsh nature reservation is rich with protected plants and rare birds.

Landmarks • One can learn about the history of the Jászság in the Jász Museum, which was officially founded in 1873, and houses the symbol of the Jász people, our precious national relic, Lehel´s horn. This beautifully carved ivory horn dates back to the 11th-12th centuries. • The museum’s permanent and periodic exhibitions display the origin of the Jász people, their migration and settlement in Hungary, how they lived and cultivated their land, the diverse products of their traditional craftsmen, in other words, the spiritual and cultural values of Jászság.

We love our city In just one long walk in the centre of our town the visitor can admire the many historic monuments constructed in the baroque and classicist styles, the statues standing in well-kept parks, and the beautifully renovated public buildings. Wherever you go you can see traces of the talent, diligence and localism of the people living here.

  14. Bercsényi Miklós PrimarySchool Memberschool of the Jászság PrimarySchools (JÁI) • Our school, located in the center of town, is 110 years old. • We teach students from grade 1 to 8. In every grade there are two parallel classes. • Apart from the general elementary education, the main profiles of the school are the teaching of mathematics and physical education at a higher level. • The technical equipment of our classrooms have been improving thus providing an environment for qualitative teaching.

  15. Sports Center • Our gymnasium is the largest sport facility in town. It gives place to numerous town events, such as ceremonies, balls as well as important games and sport tournaments.
