What Do You Believe? • 6 in 10 Americans agree that “religious belief is a matter of personal opinion [and] not about objective truth”—and 1 in 3 evangelicals (32%) say the same. • More Americans agree than disagree that “the Bible’s condemnation of homosexual behavior doesn’t apply today” (44% vs. 41%). • More than half of millennials (53%) now agree that the Bible “contains helpful accounts of ancient myths but is not literally true.”

What Do You Believe? • Ligonier’s survey found that millennials have grown a bit more conservative on abortion as a sin (57% agreed in 2018 vs. 50% in 2016) and on sex outside of marriage as a sin (54% agreed in 2018 vs. 47% in 2016). However, about half believe that the Bible’s condemnation of homosexual behavior is outdated (51%) and that gender identity is a choice (46%). • A majority of Americans downplay the importance of the church’s gathering together to worship God. • A majority of people say religious belief is a matter of personal opinion; it is not about objective truth.   5. What Christians Believe

What is a Christian? • A dictionary definition of a Christian would be something similar to “a person professing belief in Jesus as the Christ or in the religion based on the teachings of Jesus.” • The word “Christian” is used three times in the New Testament (Acts 11:26; 26:28; 1 Peter 4:16). Followers of Jesus Christ were first called “Christians” in Antioch (Acts 11:26) because their behavior, activity, and speech were like Christ. • The word “Christian” literally means, “belonging to the party of Christ” or a “follower of Christ.” [GotQuestions.org]

What is a Christian? • Christians believe there is one God who eternally exists as three distinct Persons--the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. • Christians believe Jesus died for our sins, was buried, was resurrected, and thereby offers salvation to all who will receive Him in faith. (1 Cor 15:1) • Christians believe that the Bible is the inspired, “God-breathed” Word of God and that its teaching is the final authority in all matters of faith and practice (2 Tim 3:16; 2 Pet 1:20-21).

The Foundational Base of What We Believe • How a person lives and what he does are largely determined by what he believes. • Belief in God, in the Bible, in Jesus Christ, and in heaven and hell affects a person’s everyday attitudes and actions. • The first belief we will considered is this: Christians believe that the Bible is God’s Word.

What Does the Bible Say About Itself. • THE SCRIPTURES ARE INSPIRED BY GOD: • Literally hundreds of times in the Old Testament, the prophets declared, “Thus says the Lord.” (Deut 17; Joshua 1:8) • The New Testament teaches that the Scriptures are inspired by God (2 Tim 3:15–17; 2 Pet 1:20-21)(Heb 1:1-2) • Jesus Himself spoke of Scripture as the “word of God,” and He added that “the Scripture cannot be broken.” (John 10:34-36)

  10. The Character of the Bible • All of our Theology must come from the Bible; not philosophy, cultural opinions or court findings. (Ps 119:4; 9-11) • The Bible is the embodiment of a divine revelation and supplies us with a reliable and infallible source of theological truth. -It recognizes the personality, unity, and trinity of God, and accounts for all of creation as the work of God. -It teaches that man is a sinner and cannot return to God in his own strength. -It teaches that God is omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent, holy, loving, kind, and put into operation a plan of salvation, and a revelation of Himself as needful for the experience of salvation.

The Character of the Bible • The unity of the Bible (66 books- 39 O.T and 27 N.T): • Although written by some forty different authors over a period of 1600 years, the Bible is one book. • It has one doctrinal system, one moral standard, one plan of salvation, one program of the ages. • Its teachings ae not contradictory, but supplementary. • Its prophetic predictions prove it to be of divine revelation, only God can reveal the future and fulfill what He has predicted.(Isa 46:9-10)

The Character of the Bible • The Bible has proven itself to be indestructible: • Very few books survive more than a quarter of a century but the Bible has survived every effort to undermine faith in the inspiration and authority of the Bible. • King Jehoiakimburned Jeremiah’s scrolls (Jer 36:1-32) • Roman emperors demanded every copy of the Scriptures be burned by fire in 303 A.D. • During The Reformation the Catholic Church put severe restrictions on the reading of the Bible. Permission had to be obtained to read it.

The Character of the Bible • The Bible has proven itself to be indestructible: • In 1543 an act was passed forbidding absolutely the use of Tyndale’s version of the Bible, and any reading of the Scriptures in assemblies without license. • The latest attempt to rob the Bible of its authority is the modernistic effort to degrade it to the level of other ancient religious books. • Christians must believe that the Bible is inspired by God. However, it does no good to believe the truth without acting upon that truth. (Jas 1:22-25)

  14. The Character of the Bible • The Bible was given to us by God. We should read it, study it, love it, and obey it: • If we really believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God, we will strive to make sure that we teach only the Word of God, and we will reject any teaching which is not from His Word. (Ps 119:11) • Second, we will resolve to do, to the best of our ability, the will of God as revealed in the Bible. God has always required people to comply with all of His requirements. (Jo 14:15; 1 Jo 5:3)
