Calvary Baptist Church Welcome to our Sunday Morning Service!
Introduction-Monologue • Let’s consider our current president. To some he is not their president, because they choose to not believe that he was duly elected by the people or because they disagree with his policies. Some think of him as a savior of the economy and one who is trying to “Make America Great Again”! Others have called him the most divisive president. • What it really comes down to is whether or not you agree with his policies or if you think that he has or can do something for you. With God it is the same way. Some say that He does not exist while others consider Him their Savior. • So as we consider these facts let us ponder the following question: What does God mean to you?
What He Meant To Others • To Adam: God was the Creator • Genesis 2: 8-9, • [8] And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. • [9] And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
What He Meant To Others • To Eve: God was Hope in a time of great doubt! • Genesis 3: 13-16, • 13] And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.[14] And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:[15] And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
What He Meant To Others • To Noah: God was Peace in the midst of the Storm! • Genesis 7: 1, • [1] And the LORD said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation.
What He Meant To Others • To Abraham: God was the giver of Promises • Hebrews 11: 8-10; • [8] By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. • [9] By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: • [10] For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
What He Meant To Others • To Abraham: God was the giver of Promises • Hebrews 11: 17-19, • [17] By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, • [18] Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called: • [19] Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.
What He Meant To Others • To Sarah: God was the “God of the Impossible” • Hebrews 11: 11-12, • [11] Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised. • [12] Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.
What He Meant To Others • To Jacob: God was the Game Changer • Genesis 32: 27-28, • [27] And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.[28] And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed. • To Israel: God was a Name Changer
What He Meant To Others • To David: God was strength in Battle! • Psalms 18: 34-40, • [34] He teacheth my hands to war, so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms.[35] Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy right hand hath holden me up, and thy gentleness hath made me great.[36] Thou hast enlarged my steps under me, that my feet did not slip.[37] I have pursued mine enemies, and overtaken them: neither did I turn again till they were consumed.[38] I have wounded them that they were not able to rise: they are fallen under my feet.[39] For thou hast girded me with strength unto the battle: thou hast subdued under me those that rose up against me.[40] Thou hast also given me the necks of mine enemies; that I might destroy them that hate me.
What He Meant To Others • To David: God was strength in Battle! • Battle with a Lion and a Bear • Battle with the Giant Goliath • Battle with the Philistines • Battle with his family that turned against him
What He Meant To Others • To the blind: God was the giver of sight! • To the deaf: God was the giver of hearing! • To the lame: God was the giver of mobility! • To the dead: God was the giver of new life! • To the sinner: God is the Savior! • To the saint: God is the sanctifier! • To the athiest: God is nothing! • To the lost: God is the Judge!
What He Meant To Others • To Many: God was the Victor • Hebrews 11: 32-35 • [32] And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets: • [33] Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, • [34] Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. • [35] Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection:
What He Meant To Others • To Others: God was true in tribulation! • Hebrews 11: 36-38, • [36] And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment: • [37] They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented; • [38] (Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.
Conclusion: • What Does God Mean To You?
