What are Rocks? • What do you already know about rocks? • Shape? • Size? • Different Kinds? • Location? • Made out of?
What are Rocks? • Rocks are made up of a mixture of minerals and other materials. • *Over 2500 Minerals that we know of* • Rocks come in all shapes, sizes, and colors because there are formed from one of more minerals • Rocks are formed in one of these three groups
Igneous Rocks • Igneous is a latin word that means fire • These rocks are formed when temperatures in earth’s crust begin to rise and magma begins to melt • After the magma (Lava) cools and begins to harden igneous rocks are formed.
Cooling and Hardening Magma Melting Igneous Examples: -Pumice -Rhyolite
Sedimentary Rocks • Igneous rocks turn into sediments due to weathering and erosion. • When these sediments are compacted together sedimentary rocks are formed. • Fossils form in sedimentary rocks • Example: -Sandstone
Fossils • Fossils are the remains of organisms that lived millions years ago. They are found in sedimentary rocks. • Fossils help provide scientists with important evidence to help determine what happened in Earth’s history and when it happened.
Cooling and Hardening Magma Melting Igneous Weathering & Erosion Sedimentary Sediments Compacting
Metamorphic Rocks • Sedimentary rocks become pushed down into the ground and heat and pressure changes them into metamorphic rocks. Some examples: • -Slate • - Marble
Guess the Rock??? Metamorphic (Slate) Igneous (Pumice) Sedimentary (Lime stone)
The Rock Cycle -This is the ever changing process that rocks go through. Cooling and Hardening Igneous Rocks Rocks Magma Melting Weathering & Erosion Metamorphic Sediments Sedimentary Compacting Heat and Pressure
