Compound Subjects • Some Simple Sentences can have more than one subject. • Mario and Luigi arebrothers. • Sally and Pacodatedfor twelve minutes. • Rick and Steveaggressivelypuntedthe kitten into the swiftly flowing river. • The “Compound Subject” in a sentence will always perform the same action.

4. Pattern 2A – SS with Compound Subject SS • NOTE: A Compound Subject may contain more than 2 items. • Example: • Huey, Dewey, and Louie aremy favorite cartoon characters. S S V O + + + =

5. Compound Verb • Some Simple Sentences can have more than one verb. • Robert laughed and criedthroughout the entire movie. • Lionel sang and dancedat Elton’s wedding. • Lisa polishedthe championship trophy and placedit on the mantel. • NOTE – even though the Verbs are split by an object, there is still only one subject. • Each of these sentences has a “Compound Verb,” but is still a Simple Sentence – they express one idea.

6. Pattern 2B – SS with Compound Verb SS • NOTE: A Compound Verb may contain more than 2 items. • Example: • Neil Patrick Harris acts, sings, and dancesfor his career. S V V O + + + =

7. Compound Subject and Verb • Finally, some simple sentences can have multiple Subjects and Multiple Verbs • Javier and his colleagues drafted and revised the article several times. • Miley Cyrus and her dad partied and celebratedin the USA!

8. BEWARE!!!! • In simple sentences subjects have to come as a pair. Verbs do not. • Simple Sentence: • Santa and Mrs. Claus rodethe reindeer and drankhot cocoa to celebrate the end of Christmas. • Not a Simple Sentence: • Santa rodethe reindeer, and Mrs. Claus drankhot cocoa to celebrate the end of Christmas. • NOTE: this is a Compound Sentence – we’ll learn about these later.
