Overview of The Workshop • A Little History – How we got to today • Three sessions to provide a better understanding of: the survey elements the sampling framework the data layers • Next Steps and Go Live
A Little History • Pre-1990–“We counted the equipment out ….” • 1990 onwards– EPA Grades and Zones and…. % of sites of a satisfactory or better standard • LEQSE– Grades, intermediary grades & land uses • BV 199– LAs closely involved • BV 199 a-d– litter, detritus, graffiti & fly-posting • NI 195– even greater LA input, but still Government limitations, such as a single number & separate NI 196
NI195 The Current System • 900 Total Transects • Split into three, four month periods of 300 transects • 30 transect minimum per land use • 4Elements • Litter • Detritus • Graffiti • Fly-Posting • 10 Land Uses
Feedback From The Events • Future resources and budgets • Survey detail (the what….) • Data collection (the how and the when….) • Benchmarking
Menu NI195 core elements 32 LEQSE elements QOL PublicHealth Housing Geography BusStops etc LocalAuthority OperationalArea Ward Community Temporal Neighbourhood Land Use Annually Tranche Monthly Quarterly OneOff Trendsovertime
Mobile Platform Development • Automatic uploading of data direct to the system • More efficient data collection • Wide range of hardware, including Windows Mobiles Manual uploading will remain an option for those without handhelds
Range of Reporting Outputs Can potentially utilise a wide range of graphic tools viewable at different levels, specified by the user View complete or specified results
Next Steps Developed a number of packages to meet the various needs and requests Set up a series of web pages with additional guidance Set up users on the new system

Grading Definition Not individually Defined √ Grade A : None of element Grade B : Predominantly free Grade C : Widespread distribution minor accumulations Grade D : Heavily littered significant accumulations ….. Grade B+ ….. Grade B- ….. Grade C- x
Additional Element – Weeds (definition) Weed growth is defined as any plant that is growing in a location where it is not intended, including where plants or grass are encroaching on paved areas in an unplanned way - usually by means of colonising accumulations of detritus or along cracks and joints in paving
Grading Weeds Grade A The transect is completely free from weeds or moss Grade B Small shoots of weed growth are visible in joints and along margin of paved areas, but are so small as not to entrap litter or prevent its removal through normal cleansing operations Grade C Significant weed growth is present in the transect to the extent that litter and detritus has been or could be, entrapped in the vegetation. Moss growth will be clearly visible - some raised forms - usually on the margins of paved areas Grade D There is extensive weed or moss growth which covers a significant part of the transect. It is unlikely that the litter and detritus entrapped by the vegetation can be removed using normal cleansing methods
Survey Sample Frameworks NI 195 Style Split the list into 5 equal groups (quintiles) Set which wards to select in each tranche The wards are split up to get different levels of IMD within each quintile
Sampling Framework – The Area • Choose an area • Neighbourhood Zones • Areas identified from wider surveys: • Any survey can be split into sub areas (land uses / neighbourhood areas / fronts vs. backs / cobbled vs. paved) • Identify the amount of survey sites available
Looking Ahead - Alternative Survey Planning Temporal Guidance • Designing surveys on different timescales to ensure your data is robust, accurate and usable. Monthly Quarterly Tranche Before/After Land use / Sub-Area Classifications • Designing surveys to ensure that the data is geographically represented.
Litter Types e.g. Fast Food Cigarettes Confectionary Drinks Cans Litter Count Litter Brands e.g. McDonalds Burger King Greggs KFC LEQS PRO Advanced - Layering of Data Litter Score Potential to link data sets together to form layers of rich contextual information
Litter * Detritus* Graffiti Fly-posting Leaf Fall and Blossom Fall Waste Placed Out Weeds Dog fouling Staining Fly-tipping Type Proportions Locations Counts Element Specifics (brands/collection days etc) LEQS PRO Advanced Options * Compulsory Elements
LEQS PRO Advanced Options • Any combination of elements (and options to have elements designed for your own needs) • Purpose (benchmarks / contractor performance / etc.) • Cross team / organisational working • Tiered approach • Engaging partners and other local land managers • Support from grading and sampling guidance up to full independent survey completion
Next Steps…… • Website now live www.keepbritaintidy.org/Expertise/LEQSPro • Contact us for further information or to register to use the system leqspro@keepbritaintidy.org • LEQS PRO Survey System live from the 1st April 2011
