  1. A collaborative effort between Hillsborough County School District and the University of South Florida Implementing Service Learning in the K-12 Classroom *This collaborative was made possible with funds from the Corporation for National Service’s Florida Learn & Serve program under grant number 06KSHFL001. Opinions or points of view expressed in this document do not necessarily reflect the official positions of the Corporation.  Florida Learn & Serve is a project of the Florida Department of Education and Florida State University’s Center for Leadership and Service.

  2. Purpose • Develop a cadre of in-service teachers with the knowledge and expertise to implement service-learning within their classrooms and able to supervise interns as they implement service-learning during their final internship

  3. HCSD Connects service-learning module to clinical educator training Identifies and recruits participants from high-need schools Provides mini grants to participants to conduct service-learning project USF Develops professional development workshop and manual on service-learning Delivers workshop Provides support sessions Assists in planning celebration showcasing projects Process: Year 1

  4. Year 2 • Continue to deliver service-learning workshops • Target ESE teachers • Identify 2 center schools: one will participate in implementing service-learning as a school-wide initiative, the other will serve as a control

  5. Progress to Date • Manual is completed • One workshop has taken place for in-service teachers • One workshop has taken place for pre-service teachers (110) • Set up a service-learning list-serve for workshop participants • Support sessions are in progress • Continue recruitment

  6. Challenges • Recruiting in-service teachers to participate in the project

  7. Solutions • Initially contacted principals; are now recruiting directly to teachers • Inserting service-learning as a solution to other district initiatives • Develop database of existing projects • Videotaping within the district and include vignettes into workshop
