Learning Resources • Socio-Economic Status of Cherokee County Students • 24.9% of students age 3+ are below the poverty level • According to Sonya Nieto’s (2008) data, my district’s poverty level is 2 times greater than the national average of 12.4% for “all people in the United States below the poverty level” (p. 18). • This data suggests that families do not possess the financial means to provide technology tools beyond those offered at school.

Learning Resources • Gaffney High School • We have: • 1 computer lab in the 9th grade building; • 1 computer lab in the main campus building; • Approximately 18 computers in the library available for student-use; & • 1 iPad cart available for student-use upon reservation by classroom teacher We serve approximately 2,100 students.

Gaffney High School Current Technology Tools Current Technology Needs We have: 1 computer lab in the 9th grade building; 1 computer lab in the main campus building; Approximately 18 computers in the library available for student-use; & 1 iPad cart available for student-use upon reservation by classroom teacher We need: 3 additional computer labs in the 9th grade building; 9 additional computer labs in the main campus building Approximately 12 more computers in the library for student-use One-to-one tablet technology for students to use at home.

Web-Based Course Management Systems • Web-based course management help teachers meet the needs of the 21st century student’s necessity to interact with new and emerging technology, use real-world applications, participate in a mobile learning environment, and receive immediate feedback on performance. • The following are examples of learning management systems that are available online for teachers and students: • Blackboard • Moodle • Knowledge Net • Rcampus • Edmodo Let’s take a look at Edmodo . . .

About Edmodo • Edmodo is a safe and secure online learning environment that the teacher creates for students to use as a virtual classroom. • The service is free and easy to use. • The site offers online help and an electronic gradebook to store grades. • The site offers blogs for teachers to communicate with other teaching professionals effective learning strategies, lesson plans, troubleshooting tips, and new technology resource sites. • Edmodo provides support via the web. • Users can also find tutorials on YouTube.

  7. In the Classroom • Teachers have the ability to give assignments by class, group, and individual. • Students have the ability to work on the assignments at their own pace. • The teacher and the student receive immediate feedback on performance. • The immediate feedback allows the teacher to provide individual remediation of the current lesson, offer challenging assignments for the high achieving student, reduce the amount of time spent checking student work, and a quick method for administering pre-and post-tests.

  8. Reasons for resistance If teachers say . . . Respond with . . . “I don’t have any money for this or the time to open an account.” “I don’t have the time to learn how to use this.” “I already have my documents and tests saved to display on my Promethean Board.” “I cannot remember another login and password.” “All of my students do not have access to the Internet at home.” “Great, because the account is free and takes less than a minute to open.” “There is not much to learn. Edmodo and the students do most of the work. You are just entering and evaluating data.” Great! All you have to do is upload your files.” “Just use the same login information you use to log onto your district account.” “Create assignments that students can complete at school in the computer lab or using the mobile technology cart.”
