SEAES Research afternoon Research performance and planning 14.00 SEAES post RAE 2008 (Jon Loyd and Tom Choularton, SEAES) 14.20 The REF bibliometrics system (Andrew Walsh, Head of Research Policy) Research opportunities 14.40 Nuclear-related research and Manchester’s Geological Disposal Centre (Jon Lloyd, on behalf of Dalton Nuclear Institute) 15.00 Interdisciplinary climate change research - from the SCI to the Tyndall Centre (Alice Bows, SCI/SEAES) 15.20 PhD programmes: Quotas/DTCs/DTAs (Richard Pattrick, SEAES) Enhancing commercial links 15.40 Commercialisation of Research: Cecilia Waters (Commercialisation Executive, University of Manchester Intellectual Property Limited) 16.00 Manchester University’s EPSRC KE funds: Miranda McCormick (Business Development Manager, Knowledge Transfer, EPS) 16.15-17.00: Discussions/Networking
SEAES RAE 2008 Using 4* as a basis for national ranking placed joint 7th of 41 in Earth Systems and Environmental Sciences (UoA17) Overall profile: 20, 50, 25, 5, 0 70% of our assessed research activity was rated as internationally excellent, including 20% rated as world-leading. SEAES QR income has risen from £1.0M to £1.5M
SEAES RAE 2008 School research strategy must: • Consolidate areas of strength • Prime new 4* research areas • Close gap between UEA, Bristol, UCL etc.
SEAES RAE 2008 • There has been significant university and national investment, as well as reorganisation in this department during the assessment period. • There are some very strong groups in atmospheric science, isotope geochemistry (especially cosmochemistry), rock deformation and mineral physics, with notable emerging areas of microbiology and biogeochemistry. • There is limited synergy between the solid earth science and atmospheric science research. The department may wish to consider growing research at the interfaces of these areas. • Research income per staff FTE is substantially above the median for the UoA. Research student numbers are also above the median for the UoA. • Commendably, future plans are largely focused on exploring research areas based on fundamental questions and problems for the discipline. There are also very strong links with other groups and centres within the university. • Links with commercial industry are impressive.
SCHOOL PLAN • 1. It is the aim of the School to have its entire research active staff achieve international (3*) reputations by 2010, and 30% with world-leading status by 2015. • 2. We aim to increase our submission rate to two grants per academic member of staff per year success rate to 40% by 2010. • 3. The School is well positioned to take advantage of FP7 funding and has been successful in obtaining increased funding from this source. • 4. The School aims to have an average of 2 PDRA’s per academic staff member by 2010.
5. The School will use the hosting of international conferences to publicise its brand and will encourage world class scientists to visit Manchester on study leave. Weaknesses Modelling capacity is a generic weakness across the School – especially large scale environmental modelling
Research Institutes • MIB will provide facilities for environmental biology investigations • PSI the opportunity for instrument development for monitoring the environment. • UMARI offers the chance of links via the Atmospheric Group’s work on upper atmosphere pollution. • Strong links with the Centre for Radiochemistry in the School of Chemistry, cemented by the Director being a joint appointment with the School of Chemistry.
Research Institutes • The School is committed to formal links with the Manchester Museum to mutual benefit. • Strong links with the SCI through Colin Hughes, Martin Gallagher and Alice Bows
