Setting The main characters lived in London, England during the year of 1609. Their father lives in Jamestown, Virginia and when the kids mother dies the kids go to see their father over the Atlantic Ocean. When there is a terrible storm they get stuck in Bermuda for a winter . As soon as they get off they make it to Jamestown, Virginia to find their father.
Characters Amanda- Amanda is the main character of the book who takes her brother and sister (Jemmy And Meg) to Jamestown, determined to find their father after their mother dies. Jemmy- Jemmy is the little brother of Amanda and the older Brother of Meg. He is eight and still has the adventurous spirit of a kid. He looks up to Amanda, Dr. Crider, and his Father. He is very responsible by keeping his precious door knocker that his father gave him before he left, throughout the book. Meg- Meg is the little sister of Jemmy and Amanda. She doesn’t talk much and is very shy. But after a couple months, she is not so shy and is used to talking and being around other people more.
Summary In the book A lion to Guard Us, there are three main characters Amanda, Jemmy and Meg. They go on a journey to Jamestown, Virginia to find their father after their mother dies. The kids find themselves into problems but their mother’s doctor helps them get to Virginia on the ship, Dr. Crider dies and the ship crashes onto Bermuda, the children find themselves independent without any adults making their way to Virginia to see their dad.
About the Book Club • Historical timeframe- Why was this book chosen in our historical fiction book club? This Book is historical because it takes place during the discovery of the New world. It shows that some people left their families for their jobs. • Theme of Independence- How does the theme of independence play a role in our book? The kids take matters into their own hands and go to America. When the three kid’s mother dies Dr. Crider takes them to Virginia to live with their father. When Dr. Crider dies the kids are independent and take care of themselves. They succeed in being independent by reaching their goal of seeing their father.
