Our Survey

1. We, the students of the Appoquinimink Tributary Action Team from Middletown Middle School would like to welcome you to the Public Forum!

2. Our Survey We conducted a survey to gain information on the general knowledge and opinions of Middletown Middle School students’ parents living in the Appoquinimink watershed. We selected our target audience to get a wide variety of responses and to get an idea about what the public knows.The survey was divided into three sections.

3. Section One • *In section one, parents were asked to rate the effect on the watershed of different pollutants on a 1 to 4 scale. A one indicated that the pollutant had no effect and a four indicated it had a large effect. • We found that people thought pollution sources such as air pollution, illegal dumping, oil spills, and run-off from roads had the largest effect on the quality of the water. • Other pollutants such as pet waste, fertilizers, septic systems and farming were thought to have less effect on the water quality.

4. Section Two • *Section two asked the residents of our area how much they worry about possible issues in the future. • People were more worried about things that affected them directly. For example, people felt that losing open space to development, increasing costs to run our schools, and increasing taxes were large issues. • Whereas the possibility of increasing government regulation and increasing costs of land were less of an issue.

5. Section Three • *In this section, we asked how important different issues were to the public. • Protecting natural things such as wildlife, aquatic life, and clean drinking water were most important to them. • People were least concerned about the increasing value and cost of land and property.
