This PowerPoint guides students on the correct use of prepositional phrases, participial phrases, gerund phrases, infinitive phrases, and appositive phrases. It includes exercises for identifying and using phrases effectively in writing.

English IV August 15, 2014 – Work through this PowerPoint. Follow the instructions for each slide. Turn in at the end of class. Write answers on the lines provided for each slide.
Bell-Ringer • Write two positive things and one not-so-positive thing that have happened since school started. What did you learn from these things? What, if anything, could you have done to make the not-so-positive thing better? Use at least one vocabulary word in your response (underline it). Put this on the back of your BR paper. • It’s Friday! Turn in your bell-ringer handout. Do not turn it in until the end of class. You will need the Wednesday BR later in this Pp (if you did not complete the homework).

Homework Check • Get out last night’s homework – the handout over phrases/clauses. Check your answers. Prepositional Phrase • Begins with a preposition and ends with a noun or pronoun that is called the object of the preposition • Down the street • Through the store
Prepositional Adjective Phrase • A prepositional phrase that modifies a noun or pronoun and tells “what kind” or “which one” / usually follows the word it modifies • The plate with the blue flowers • The book on the table
Prepositional Adverb Phrase • A prepositional phrase that modifies a verb, an adjective, or an adverb and tells “when, where, how, why, or to what extent” / may come before or after the word it modifies • Before class, Bo begged his friends for a pencil. • We ate burritos at The Taco Palace.
Participial Phrase • Consists of a participle (verb form used as an adjective) and all the words related to the participle • I would not want to visit the frozen tundra. • Phil, worn out from his long trip, slept for twelve hours. • We saw an old woman walking up the path.
Gerund Phrase • Consists of a gerund (verb form ending in –ing used as a noun) and all the words related to the gerund • Walking through the woods is good exercise. • Allow twenty minutes per pound for roasting a turkey.
Infinitive Phrase • Consists of an infinitive (verb preceded by “to” that can be used as a noun, adjective, or adverb) and all the words related to the infinitive • To be objective is difficult. • Always try to proofread your work.
Appositive Phrase • Consists of an appositive (noun or pronoun placed beside another noun or pronoun to identify or explain it) and its modifiers • My brother Tom • Her favorite book, Harry Potter,
Identifying Phrases • Get out your copy of “Simplicity.” Identify the following phrases (write answers on lines beside this slide): • (1) Paragraph 1, Sentence 1 – of American writing • (2) Paragraph 3, Sentence 1– to strip every sentence to its cleanest components • (3) Paragraph 5, Sentence 1 – where they have to keep the work going to put something across the window • (4) Paragraph 8, Sentence 1 – the reader
Identifying Phrases (write answers beside this slide) • (5) Paragraph 8, Sentence 5 – snoozing in a chair • (6) Paragraph 9, Sentence 4 – hacking through the verbiage • (7) Paragraph 10, Sentence 1 – Faced with such obstacles • (8) Paragraph 11, Sentence 6 – to see this stuff • (9) Paragraph 12, Sentence 2 – Thinking clearly • (10) Paragraph 12, Sentence 4 – they retire from their real profession
In-Class Writing • Get out your homework – the revised paragraph of Wednesday’s BR. • In your paragraph, identify any prepositional adjective phrases, prepositional adverb phrases, participial phrases, appositive phrases, gerund phrases, and infinitive phrases. Highlight these with a highlighter or circle them.
Homework • Revise the BR paragraph one more time. You should be adding more details and the paragraph should get longer with each revision. • The revision should include the following (underline them): • Oneprepositional adjective phrases • Oneprepositional adverb phrases • Oneparticipial phrases • Onegerund phrases • Oneinfinitive phrases • Oneappositive phrases • Add a second Unit 1 vocabulary word (so you will have two vocabulary words in there.)
Exit Slip • Be sure to bring the revised BR paragraph back with you on Monday. • Address the following statement on the lines beside this slide: • Today I learned _______________; today I am still confused about ____________. • TURN IN THIS COMPLETED PACKET AND THE BELL-RINGER SHEET.
