Tobacco Free Initiative (TFI) Europe The goal: • ·building Region-wide political commitment for tobacco control and the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control; • ·providing international support to building national capacity for tobacco control; • ·strengthening international coordination; and • ·facilitating information exchange, technical cooperation and monitoring.
following Warsaw Declaration in Feb. 2002 • Called for: • The European Strategy for Tobacco Control (next Action Plan) • Europe’s active role for a strong Framework Convention(add from DG’s message, +European coordination process, Romania participated…) • Strengthening partnerships and solidarity for coordinated policies(NC meetings, GYTS – see invitation letter, Channelling the Outrage – see message from Dec.2002, or even the OSI meeting)

The European Strategy for Tobacco Control Concept 1. Builds on: - International evidence - Lessons learnt from 3 previous Action Plans (1987-1991) - Guiding principles set out in the Warsaw Declaration 2. Sets out: - strategic directions to be carried out through national policies - mechanisms and timeframe for international cooperation 3. Consistency with FCTC’s approach

World No Tobacco Day 2003 • In 2003, the theme for World No Tobacco Day is tobacco free film and fashion. • The WHO is calling on the entertainment industry, in particular the world of film and fashion, to stop promoting a product that has devastating effects on public health and to start promoting a tobacco free society.
