Diagnosis • The Slap Test The slap test evaluates the adductor function of the arytenoids • Endoscopy • To view the dynamics of the laryngeal structures during respiration
Surgical Protocol • There are four treatment options for this condition: • Prosthetic laryngoplasty (tie back and most common) • Ventriculectomy • Cordecotmy • Neuromuscular pedicle graft
Tie Back • This surgical procedure consists of stitching the paralysed flapper in an open position so that normal air flow can be restored.
Post Operative care • Prior to Surgery antibiotic are administered • Continue with antibiotics after surgery 3-7 day • Anti-inflammatory Meds 3-7 days post op • Monitoring of incision for swelling, heat and discharge. • Cleaning on the surgical site BID and application of Vaseline around the site and down the neck
Long Term Prognosis • Depends on the horses level of performance and surgical treatment performed • Success of treatment ranges from 50-90% depending on the horses work. • Race horses require full abduction and stabilization of the arytenoid, to remove air flow obstruction.
