Imperialism: • Extending power by acquiring territory around the globe or exploiting weaker nations to serve national interests. “World Bully”
Expansionism: • The policy of territorial or economic expansion.
Yellow Journalism: • A type of sensational, biased, and often false reporting for the sake of attracting readers.
Big Stick Policy: • Theodore Roosevelt’s policy that supported the Monroe Doctrine. Stated that the U.S. had the right to oppose European actions in the Western Hemisphere and the right to intervene economically and militarily in the domestic affairs of its neighbors if they seemed unable to secure their own sovereignty (freedom). “Speak softly and carry a big stick: you will go far.”
Open Door Policy: • A policy that allowed each foreign nation in China to trade freely in the other nations’ spheres of influence.
Dollar Diplomacy: • A policy of joining the business interests of a country with its diplomatic interests abroad.
Moral Diplomacy: • A policy that allowed the U.S. to control the actions of other countries through the exercise of economic power.
