Engagement Scenario Outline • Goal • To stay in the Cog’s environment • To offend the Cogs would mean exile • Key events • Cogs sing to each other to communicate feeling (volume, pitch, speed, tone) • Cog will follow and continue to sing – user can’t escape by leaving the immediate environment • Possible event outcomes • User decides to pursue romantic relationship • User decides to match different Cogs • What is meant to happen • User has to discover the meaning of singing • Use of ‘digital notes’ in the physical environment (RFID) • Observation of other Cogs in the virtual environment • What is start event • Romantic advance received by user (singing) • What is end event • User learns about Cog ‘romantic strategies’ • User resolves the advance by: • agreeing to become involved with the Cog – Cog and user sing together • by finding a compatible Cog for the first

  3. Playing the Scenario • Users are given a number of tunes, which can be manipulated • Users can learn which manipulations relate to which emotions • Learning manipulations can be done through: • Digital notes • Asking other Cogs for advice • Trial and error

  4. Bennet‘s Model • Differentiation-Appreciation: • Learn what the songs mean • Learn how to produce appropriate songs • Reflection: • Teach another culture • Explain purpose of the Cog‘s songs • Questions prompt user to explain link between manipulations and emotion • Transfer: • Basic concept of expressing emotion can be applied in attempting to learn about a new culture
