Study Guide Saul Mendiola EDTC 6343 Competency 001 G & H
Competency 001 Demonstrates knowledge and application of strategies for searching (e.g., keyword, Boolean, natural, language), locating and acquiring information from electronic resources (e.g., collaborative software, the Internet, intranets.
Keyword Search Break your topic into keywords and pull out words that indicate the main concepts Example: What motivates adult learners taking online courses? Keywords: motivates, adultlearners, onlinecourses Words such as “what” and “taking” are not keywords
Keyword Search Brainstorm alternative keywords
Boolean Search Boolean searches allow you to combine words and phrases into search statements to retrieve information from the Internet. Much of Internet searching is based on the principles of Boolean logic. It is named for the British-born Irish mathematician George Boole Boolean logic consists of three logical operators: OR AND NOT
Natural Search In search engines a natural search is one where results are returned based on the natural indexing of the Web site, as opposed to those that are returned based on paid advertising and editorial changes made by the search engine itself. Also called organic search or unpaid search.
Language Search Using plain language to enter your search This type of search is the easiest to understand, but many databases don't offer it as a function. A natural language search is a search using regular spoken language, such as English. Using this type of search you can ask the database a question or you can type in a sentence that describes the information you are looking for. The database then uses a programmed logic to determine the keywords in the sentence by their position in the sentence. The Internet search service Ask.com offers natural language searching.
