Learn to describe the frequency distribution of a data set and to make a cumulative frequency table and histogram.
Vocabulary frequency distribution cumulative frequency
Frequency distribution describes the number of values in a data set that fall into each interval. The shape of a histogram may also help you find the median and any outliers.
Additional Example 1A: Describing Frequency Distribution The histogram shows the grades of the students in Mr. Porter's class. Around what values does the data cluster? The data clusters around values 81-90.
Additional Example 1B: Describing Frequency Distribution The histogram shows the grades of the students in Mr. Porter's class. Explain whether the histogram shows the median or outliers of the data set. There are 26 values, so the median is between 81 and 90. There is no outlier.
Students Check It Out: Example 1A The histogram shows the number of CDs owned by students. Around what values does the data cluster? The data clusters around values 11-15.
Students Check It Out: Example 1B The histogram shows the number of CDs owned by students. Explain whether the histogram shows the median or outliers of the data set. There are 144 values, so the median is between 11 and 15. There is no outlier.
Cumulative frequency is the frequency of all data values that are less than or equal to a given value.
Additional Example 2A: Making A Cumulative Frequency Table The weights of dogs seen at a vet's office are given below. 45, 15, 75, 48, 86, 52, 39, 55, 60, 44, 71, 78. 93, 35, 27 A. Use the data to make a cumulative frequency table of the data set.
Additional Example 2B: Making A Cumulative Frequency Table The weights of dogs seen at a vet's office are given below. 45, 15, 75, 48, 86, 52, 39, 55, 60, 44, 71, 78. 93, 35, 27 B. How many of the dogs seen at the vet's office weigh less than 81 pounds? 13 dogs
Additional Example 2C: Making A Cumulative Frequency Table The weights of dogs seen at a vet's office are given below. 45, 15, 75, 48, 86, 52, 39, 55, 60, 44, 71, 78. 93, 35, 27 C. Make a histogram and line graph of the data in the cumulative frequency table in part A.
Check It Out: Example 2A The ages of people in line at a movie theater are given below. 17, 16, 16, 21, 23, 25, 38, 44, 19, 31, 34, 18 A. Use the data to make a cumulative frequency table of the data set.
Check It Out: Example 2B The ages of people in line at a movie theater are given below. 17, 16, 16, 21, 23, 25, 38, 44, 19, 31, 34, 18 B. How many people in line are under the age of 31? 8 people
