CHAPTER 12 SURFACE AREA
KEY TERMS • ORTHOGONAL DRAWING – the 2-dimensional top, lef, front & right view of a 3-d object. • CORNER VIEW – the view from a corner of a 3-d figure, also called perspective view. • PERSPECTIVE VIEW – same a corner view • REGULAR POLYHEDRON – all faces & edges of polyhedron are congruent. • PLATONIC SOLIDS – regular polyhedron.
POLYHEDRON – closed 3-d figures mad up of flat polygonal regions. • FACE – the flat regions formed by the polygons and their interiors. • EDGE – pairs of faces intersect in segments. • BASES – two (2) flat surfaces that support the polyhedron.
PRISM – a solid with the following characteristics: • Two (2) parallel congruent faces (bases). The other sides are parallelograms. The intersections are vertex. • REGULAR PRISM – a prism with bases that are regular polygons. EG: cube.
PYRAMID – a polyhedron with all faces (except one) intersecting at the vertex.
CYLINDER - a solid with congruent circular bases in a pair of parallel planes.
SPHERE - a set of points in a space that are a given distance from a given point.
CH. 12.2 NET & SURFACE AREA • NET – the cut out of a polyhedron opened up with edges laid flat. • SURFACE AREA – the sum of all areas of a polyhedron laid out.
