What is NJIIS? • The official immunization registry for the State of NJ • Operational since 1998 • Web enabled since 2002 • An immunization information system that consolidates immunization histories of children, adolescents and adults • Populated with electronic birth records (EBC) from NJ’s hospitals
Purpose • Provides immediate access to immunization records to: • health care providers, schools, health plans and childcare facilities • Evaluates patients’ immunization status • Identifies children who are due or past due • Assesses immunization coverage in community • Identifies pockets of need • National and State Healthy People 2010 objective • 95% enrollment for NJ’s children 6 years old and under
Benefits • Access to real-time clinical immunization information • Including current vaccine recommendations • Reduce paperwork & staff time in obtaining records, responding to requests for immunization information • Print official immunization record for school enrollment • Consolidate immunizations from all providers • Enable accurate immunization assessment • Interpret the complex immunization schedule
Enrollment • Departmental policy since 1995 was opt-in enrollment requiring parental consent; • Registry Act. Explicit consent children born on or after Jan.1, 1998 opt-out. • FERPA -consents required to add students immunization history
Access • Limited to certain specified entities or organizations. • Authorized users must sign user agreement relating to Registry operations and confidentiality policies. • User levels of access, password protected, audit trail within system.
NJIIS Statistics • 450 Active Healthcare Providers • 1,250 Vaccines For Children Providers • 400 Schools • 5,000 Trained users • 1,200,000 Patient records • 11,700,000 Doses in system Every month • 12,000 Children are loaded from EBC & entered on-line via web • 160,000 Doses are entered on-line via Web • 50,000 Doses are loaded electronically from Medicaid, EMR and billing systems

School nurse pilot • Second pilot March 27– May 31, 2006 • 12 school districts participated • 1,510 consents sent to parents • 49 % percent returned, 85% consented to enroll child in NJIIS • 5,911 vaccine doses added

Adult Immunization Schedule • For students/patients years of age and older • Based on previously received childhood and adolescent immunizations • Meets ACIP/CDC requirements

How to prepare for NJIIS? • Assess your computer needs • Ensure computer hardware/software compatibility with NJIIS requirements • PC Hardware minimum requirements: • 300 MHZ processor running Windows 98 • 64 MB RAM • 56K Internet connection • PC Software requirements: • Internet Explorer 6.0 • High speed Internet access is recommended
