  3. Partner Share • Why does promoting freedom sometimes happen in a battle on a battlefield? • Why is freedom such a beloved idea? • What kinds of freedoms can you name that you have in this country?

  4. Amazing Words • acquire- means to obtain or get something • They had to fight to acquire the right to vote. • Vote- an opportunity to make a choice about a proposal, a motion, or a candidate for public office • In the United States, we vote for a new president every four years

  5. Word Analysis Identify the word family in each column.

  7. Literary Terms • Rhyme, Rhythm and Cadence • Rhythm is a pattern of sounds • Rhythm creates cadence, or flow of the language • Rhyme is the repetition of sounds and can occur at the end or the middle of the word

  8. Sequence • Sequence is the order in which things happen in a story • Keeping track of sequence helps us to understand a story • Clue words, dates, and times help us determine sequence • Find the sequence in Before the Midnight Ride

Endings –s, -ed, -ing The stars were glimmering in the nighttime sky. • I am not sure what glimmering means, but when I cover the –ing ending, I see the root word glimmer. • I recognize that word, but I am not sure what that means. I’ll see if there are context clues in the sentence to help me. • I know that the stars shine, so maybe glimmer means that same as shine.

  10. Vocabulary • Fate- destiny • His fate was decided at birth. • Fearless- bold • He acted fearless in front of the girls.

  11. Vocabulary • Glimmer- dim light • We read in the glimmer of light. • Lingers-stays • The smell of smoke lingers long after the cigar was put out.

  12. Vocabulary • Magnified-made to look larger • He magnified the ant to look at it. • Somber-gloomy • He stared with a somber look after they lost the game.

  13. Vocabulary • Steed- high spirited horse • He rode proudly on his steed.

  14. Subject-Verb Agreement • The compound subject , The blacksmith and baker, is plural, so it takes the plural verb form respond. • A collective noun is singular if it refers to a group acting as one. • It is plural if it refers to members of the group acting individually.

  15. Do these Subject and Verbs agree? • Leah eats eggs for breakfast. • My family reads books. • The class like math and they also like science. • The public enjoy the concert.

  16. Spelling Final Syllables er, ar, or • All words with double l end –ar • Most common spelling is –er • Words ending in –or often mean “one who” and “that which”
