  2. I. Allies Strike Back A. April 1942: “Doolittle’s Raid”! 1. US Col. James “Jimmy” Doolittle leads bombing attack on Tokyo 2. Shows Japan is vulnerable to air attacks B. May 1942: Battle of the Coral Sea 1. Japan advancing south, planning attack on Australia 2. Five-day battle using aircraft carriers, US is able to stop a Japanese invasion for first time in the war C. June 1942: Battle of Midway– 1. After breaking a Japanese code, forces led by US Admiral Nimitz, launch surprise attack on Japanese fleet 2. US Dive bombers & torpedo planes destroy four Jpn. aircraft carriers  turning point in Pacific war!

Apr. – June ‘45: Battle of Okinawa • Japanese launch 1,900+ kamikaze attacks • 7,600 Americans and 120,000 Japanese killed • Americans worried what an invasion of the Japanese Islands would “cost” II. Navajo Code Talkers • 400 Navajo Native Americans are recruited into the Marine Corps • Navajo language used as secret code for communication • Code never “broken” by the Japanese
