Influences on the Constitution Mayflower Compact – Created in 1620, it was America’s first attempt at self-government Magna Carta – A document created in England in 1215 that gave the people specific rights and liberties English Bill of Rights - A list of specific rights that was guaranteed to all citizens by law

Compromise The Great Compromise created a two-house legislature The lower house, the House of Representatives, would be based on population The upper house, the Senate, would give two votes to each state, regardless of population The Three-Fifths Compromise determined that slaves would be counted as three-fifths of a person for representation and taxation
