Human Activity Soft- Hard structures
Types of shoreline stabilization methods • Soft/non-structural stabilization: • Erosion control practices using plantings and organic material to protect or enhance a shoreline. • Vegetation and beach nourishment • Hard/structural stabilization: • The use of hardened structures to stabilize a shoreline • Bulkheads, sea walls, jetties, groins, etc.
Beach Nourishment • depositing sand on the beach in order to widen it
Beach Nourishment Florida coastline
Bulkheads • shoreline structure that primarily holds back soil • provides little protection from waves.
Seawall • structure that provides shoreline protection from waves as well as holds back soil.
Jetties • man-made piles of boulders or concrete that are built on either side of a coastal inlet • Allows channel to the ocean to stay open.
Groins • Man-made structures designed to trap sand as it is moved down the beach by the longshore drift
Breakwaters • a large pile of rocks built parallel to the shore • A breakwater can cause millions of dollars in beach erosion in the decades after it is built
