PROGRAMS FOR IMPROVING THE NHD IN VIRGINIAMARCH 29, 2012 10:00AM – 12:00PM VIDEO CONFERENCE
Agenda 1 STATE STEWARDS UNDER MOU VDOT’S APPLICATION OF NHD VDOT’S INVOLVEMENT WITH NHD EDITS BALANCE GOALS AND OJBECTIVES 2 3 4
STATE STEWARDS UNDER MOU 1 • Virginia Partners • Virginia Geographic Information Network (VGIN) • Virginia Department of Forestry (DOF) • Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) • Virginia Department of Conservation & Recreation (DCR)Virginia Department of Games and Inland Fisheries (DGIF) • Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS)
VDOT’S APPLICATION OF NHD 2 • VDOT is not a designated steward under the MOU • VDOT is a permitted small MS4 in Virginia • Has a need for identifying receiving waters as well as associated watershed • Particularly for impairedwaters and approved TMDLs
VDOT’S APPLICATION OF NHD 2 • VDOT needed a quick and efficient system to identify projects that will be required to follow TMDL requirements • EEE and JMT developed a watershed delineation tool that would create a watershed from the downstream point of a DEQ listed impaired water
VDOT’S INVOLVEMENT WITH NHD EDITS 3 • DEQ impaired dataset medium resolution (1:100,000). • Discontinuous and lacked directionality • VDOT offered to utilize their MS4 contractor to update the NHD dataset to a point where DEQ would adopt it as the impaired waters dataset
BALANCE OF GOALS AND OBJECTIVES 4 • Edit in a manner consistent with the Stewards current practices • Met with USGS, DEQ, DCR and DGIF to discuss their knowledge and expertise • Stewards need to know what our objectives • They need to know where we left off
