Consider the “Rhetorical” Situation: • Purpose:To show that you understand what you have read and can analyze and apply information in an essay • Audience: Your instructor, who will evaluate using certain criteria • Genre: In an English class, this is usually a literary analysis • Stance: Remain formal, detached, and critical
Pay Attention to Key Words in the Question! • Analyze: Break an idea into parts and examine each part • Apply: Consider how an idea or concept might work out in practice • Argue/Prove/Justify: Offer reasons, evidence, examples to support a position • Compare/Contrast: Explore similarities/differences
Terms, continued: • Critique: Analyze and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses • Define: Explain what a term/word means • Describe: Write about important characteristics or features of something • Evaluate: Determine something’s significance or value • Explain: Provide reasons and examples to clarify an idea, argument, or event
Terms, continued: • Summarize: Give the major points of a text or idea • Trace: Explain a sequence of ideas or order of events
Before You Start Writing: • Scan the question(s) • Read over the entire test • Do not panic! • Plan: Allow yourself time for revising and editing. • Jot down your main ideas • Rephrase the question in your opening statement • Provide a concise thesis statement • Write on every other line to provide room for additions or changes and for ease of readability • Go over your answer to check for problems
