Plates-rigid blocks of crust and upper mantle rock (puzzle pieces) EX: North American plate, Pacific Plate -Very large, float on soft mantle and move with mantle -Can collide-create mtns or volcanoes erupt (Andes Mtns in S.A.) -Pull apart-ridges and volcanoes form -Slide past each other-fault lines- earthquakes

Form where plates collide-crust folds, cracks, bends upward. -Some formed on ocean floor (Cascade Mtns.) -Some form from pressure (Grand Tetons-flat land around them) -Magma-hot, soft rock from Earth’s mantle. 4.) Volcanoes 4.) Mtn formed by lava and ash. -Lava-Magma that reaches the Earth’s surface. -Ash- small pieces of hardened lava. -Chains form where oceanic and and continental plates collide (Mt. St. Helens in Cascade Mtns) -Can form in middle of plates by melting a hole (Hawaiian Islands)

5.) Earthquakes 5.) shaking cause by a sudden release of energy from Earth’s crust. Plates push, pull, bend, or rub against each other. -Fault lines- places where pieces of the crust move -SeismicWaves-ripples from an Earthquake -Seismograph-instrument to record waves -Richter Scale- Measure strength/magnitude of an Earthquake
