Landforms of Shanghai Shanghai is located on the eastern side of the Yangtze River delta. It borders the Yangtze River to the north, Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces to the west, and the Hangzhou Bay to the south. The Huangpu River also runs through Shanghai. Because of its geographical location, it has become a major port city. The Tianma Mountain, Fenghuang Mountain, Hengshan Mountain, and Xiaokunshan Mountain are located in the southern part of Shanghai. Yangtze River
The Huangpu River & Bund The Huangpu River is known as the mother river of Shanghai that separates the city into east and west sections. The Bund, a series of buildings on the east side of the Huangpu River, is the symbol for Shanghai. Commercial houses and finance buildings built in the 1930’s are located along the Bund. During the night, pedestrians walking on the riverside promenade, can see the bright lights from the Bund. The Bund Huangpu River
Nanjing Road The Nanjing Road is considered to be the #1 commercial street in China. It has been a landmark for Shanghai for a long time. It is 5.5 miles long with over 600 shops. About 1,700,000 people come here each day. You could purchase anything you want from cheap brands to world famous brands of products. It has restaurants like KFC, McDonalds, and Pizza Hut. It also has exotic Chinese foods.
Yuyaun Garden The Yuyuan Garden is the largest of Shanghai’s ancient gardens with Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty architecture. The garden has six areas, each with its own style. The Grand Rockery, in the center of the garden, is the most famous sight. Near the garden, there are a variety of local snack shops.
Jade Buddha Temple The Jade Buddha Temple is the most famous temple in Shanghai. The White Jade Buddha's came from Burma in the nineteenth century. One Buddha is sitting down while the other is in the position of the “lucky repose”. The temple also has images of kings. Most people come to worship the Buddha’s and burn incense at the shrine.
Xin Tian Di Xin Tian Di is a street known for its historical and cultural images. It shows the popular and leisurely life style of the new generation of the city. It has Shikumen and modern architecture. It has become a fashionable and popular pedestrian street in the middle of the city. Cafes, bars, and romantic restaurants can be seen everywhere around the Xin Tian Di.
Language The official language is Mandarin Chinese. The vernacular language of Shanghai is Shanghainese, a dialect of Wu Chinese. Shanghainese is a mixture of Wu Chinese and Ningbo. Almost all of the people who speak Shanghainese under the age of 40 can speak Mandarin fluently. In grade school, English is taught as a primary course starting in first grade.
Government China is a communist country, therefore people give most of the their wages to the government. They live simple lives. China’s head of state is Hu Jintao. He has been the head of state since 2003.
Holidays China has 7 major holidays or festivals in a year. On these days, all Chinese people are on vacation. The holidays are New Year's Day, Spring Festival, Qingming Festival, May Day, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day. There are also other holidays but they are not the major holidays. Some of these are Woman’s Day, Children’s Day, and Youth Day.
Economy Shanghai is a very important economic, financial, shipping and trade center in China. It is a major port city and because of that excellent port, Shanghai has been a leading power of economic and trade development since ancient times. Because of Shanghai, China’s economy has risen 10% in the last 15 years.
Sports Shanghai has many different sports but some of the famous ones are cricket, basketball, and bowling. There are also other sports that are not played in America, such as dragon boat racing, squash, and handball.
