At the End of This Presentation… Students will know: • Who invented the Crayola crayon. • What the original colors were. • Was this invention intended. They will have a better understanding of the invention itself, as well as the intentional use.
Who invented it? And when? Binney & Smith Company was the first to invent the Crayola crayon. The crayons were introduced to the world in 1903.
Background Binney & Smith representatives would show their new pencils and chalk in schools to persuade the schools to buy from them. They noticed a need for better-quality, affordable wax crayons, so they quickly changed their industrial marking crayons to be used in schools. They make the crayons smaller and add colored pigments to the paraffin wax. So basically, crayons were an unintended success!
Intentional Use The intentional use of crayons were to give color to pictures. Also, as entertainment for children to use inside of school and out.
Unintended Effects In 1800s, it was Binney & Smith’s carbon pigments (that were used to make the paint and color for crayons)that the Goodrich company added to their traditional line of white auto tires to make them black. The pigment not only changed the color of the tires, but also made them more durable. White tires vanished from highways after that.
Fun Fact! The original colors that were sold were… -red -yellow -blue -green -orange -brown -purple -black
