1. Mateo10:17 - 22 17 En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus apóstoles: “Cuídense de la gente, porque los llevaran a los tribunales, los azotaran en las sinagogas, 18 los llevaran ante gobernadores y reyes por mi causa; así darán testimonio de mí ante ellos y ante los paganos.

2. 19 Pero, cuando los enjuicien, no se preocupen por lo que van a decir o por la forma de decirlo, porque, en ese momento se les inspirará lo que han de decir. 20 Pues no serán ustedes los que hablen, sino el Espíritu de su Padre el que hablará por ustedes.

3. 21 El hermano entregará a su hermano a la muerte, y el padre, a su hijo; los hijos se levantaran contra sus padres y los mataran; 22 todos los odiaran a ustedes por mi causa, pero el que persevere hasta el fin se salvara”.

6. Matthew10:17 - 22 17 But beware of people, for they will hand you over to courts and scourge you in their synagogues, 18 and you will be led before governors and kings for my sake as a witness before them and the pagans.

7. 19 When they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say. You will be given at that moment what you are to say. 20 For it will not be you who speak but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

8. 21 Brother will hand over brother to death, and the father his child; children will rise up against parents and have them put to death. 22 You will be hated by all because of my name, but whoever endures to the end will be saved.

11. Reflections on Matthew 10:17 - 22 Reflexiónes en Mateo 10:17 - 22 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. Dec. 26, 2007 In the gospel selection for today, the Lord foretold the persecution that will come upon his followers. He prepares his followers for martyrdom. St. Stephen, whose feast we celebrate today, is the first Christian martyr. His testimony has always been very valuable for the Church.

12. En la selección del evangelio de hoy, el Señor nos dijo antemano que sus discípulos iban a sufrir persecución. Así preparó a sus discípulos para el martirio. San Esteban, cuya fiesta celebramos hoy, es el primer mártir Cristiano. Su testimonio siempre ha sido muy valioso para la Iglesia.

13. The word martyr in Greek means testimony. It refers to the person that testifies for something. He holds such and such is true, worthy of belief. It does not have to be by blood. We can give testimony of many things and not necessarily be killed for doing it.

14. En Griego, la palabra “mártir” quiere decir testigo. Se refiere a la persona que da testimonio de algo. Certifica que es cierto, que es digno de nuestra creencia. No tiene que derramar uno sangre cada vez que seamos testigos de la verdad.

15. But in the case of St Stephen, we realize that he was the first one to fulfill the words of Jesus, that Christians would be persecuted, and even be killed, for witnessing in his Name.

16. Pero en el caso de San Esteban, nos damos cuenta que fue el primero en el cual se cumplió la palabra de Jesús, que sus discípulos iban a sufrir persecución por razón de dar testimonio a su Santo Nombre.

17. “Do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say, when they hand you over,” Jesus said. In El Paso, in l992, many of us went to jail when we tried to stop abortions in the clinics. We claimed this holy word. The Lord released us from suffering stress, and gave us an enormous peace and joy!

18. “No se preocupen por lo que van a decir o por como lo dirán cuando los entreguen” dice el Señor. En El Paso, Texas, en l992, cuando muchos de nosotros fuimos encarcelados por tratar de acabar con los abortos, cuando protestamos en frente de las clínicas, reclamamos esas santas palabras. El Señor nos liberó de toda preocupación, y ¡nos concedió enormes cantidades de paz y gozo! ¡Gloria a Dios!

19. Jesus also said: “Whoever endures to the end will be saved.” St Stephen endured to the end. He was stoned to death, but he was saved. In Latin the word “Stephen” means, “crowned”. He was crowned with a victory that is everlasting. His adversaries were unable to withstand or contradict his eloquence and wisdom.

20. Jesús también dijo: “Cualquiera que perdure hasta el fín, será salvado.” San Esteban perduró hasta el fin. Aunque fue apedreado a la muerte, fue salvado. En Latín la palabra Estéban quiere decir “coronado”. Fue coronado con una victoria que perdura para siempre. Sus adversarios no pudieron resistir o contradecir su sabiduría o su elocuencia.

21. Thus was fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah 54.17, “no weapon that is fashioned against you will prosper, and you shall confute every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord and their vindication is from me,” says the Lord. If it is our heritage, we need to claim it. We claim it when we pray, seeking the face of Jesus.

22. Así se cumplió la profecía de Isaías 54.17: “ninguna arma forjada contra ti dará resultado; y a la lengua que te acuse en juicio le probarás que es culpable. Esta es la herencia de los siervos del Señor, yo soy su vindicador” dice el Señor. Hay que reclamar nuestra herencia. Esto se hace en la oración, al buscar el rostro de Jesús.

23. Chrysostom (Homilies on the Acts of the Apostles 15) notes that Stephen gained strength as he “gazed on the face of Jesus” (Acts 6.15). His face was like the face of an angel. This was his grace, his love gift. His love of the Lord Jesus made him strong. When you love someone, you look for his/her face. And we get stronger in our love, strong enough to carry on. We will labor with love for that person, we will sacrifice.

24. Crisóstomo (Homilías Acerca de los Hechos de Los Apóstoles 15) nota que San Esteban se hizo fortaleció al fijar la mirada en Jesús (Hechos 7.55). Su rostro les pareció el de un ángel (Hechos 6.15). Así se manifestó el amor de Dios a él. Su amor del Señor Jesús lo hizo fuerte. Cuando amas a alguien, buscas su rostro. Y te haces más fuerte en tu amor, lo suficiente para seguir adelante. Te sacrificas con más ganas, con gozo y alegría, porque amas a esa persona.

25. Our face will mirror the face of Jesus the more we pray. Look for his face on the crucifix, as he sheds his blood for us. Look for the face of Jesus at the crib, like Our Lady of Guadalupe did. She also wants to find Jesus reflected in our face, as she did in Juan Diego. Look for his face in innocent babies, who are survivors, because they were not aborted.

26. Entre más oración tengamos, más será nuestra rostro un reflejo como en un espejo, del rostro de Jesús. Busca su rostro en un crucifijo, para verlo como se veía al derramar su sangre preciosa por nosotros. Busca el rostro de Jesús en la cuna, como lo hizo nuestra Señor de Guadalupe. Ella también quiere encontrar la reflexión del rostro de Jesús en nuestras caras, como lo encontro en el rostro de Juan Diego.

27. Look for his face in innocent children, like the twelve year old Jesus, asking questions, in the Temple. Look for an image of his face in St. Thomas the Apostle was called the twin, because he so resembled Jesus.

28. Busca su rostro en los niños inocentes, que sobreviven, porque no fueron abortados, gracias a Dios. Busca el rostro de Jesús en las caras de los niños que todavía son inocentes, así como el niño Jesús a la edad de doce años, perdido en templo, preguntando preguntas. 29. Can we find his face reflected in the poor, the hungry, the thirsty, the prisoner, the disabled, the maimed, the cripple, the refugees, the rejected immigrants who are refugees, just like Jesus was when he fled into Egypt? Can we find his face in the downtrodden, the marginalized, the forgotten, and the old?

30. ¿Podemos encontrar su rostro reflexionado en los pobres, los hambrientos, los sedientos, los prisioneros, los lisiados, los cojos, los refugiados, los inmigrantes, que buscan refugio así como lo hizo Jesús cuando de niño se lo llevó Señor San José? ¿Podemos encontrar su rostro en los más aporreados, marginados, y olvidados, los ancianos?

31. Sacred Heart Church in El Paso, Texas, is just one block from the Juarez, Mexico border crossing. Daily we see thousands walk across to shop, to work, to seek refuge, to seek aid. It reminds me of Our Lady and good St. Joseph looking for an inn, wherein Jesus might be born.

32. La Iglesia del Corazón de Jesús en El Paso, Texas, esta localizada una cuarda del puente acruzár el Rio Grande, de Ciudad Juárez, México. Diariamente vemos miles que cruzan para hacer compras, trabajar, buscar refugio o ayuda. Me recuerda que Nuestra Señora y buen Señor San José andaban buscando donde naciera el Niño Jesús.

33. Our Pastor, Fr. Ed Gross, S.J., reminded us Jesuits that reside here, that we are the first stop for so many of these people. They don’t all say it with their lips, but they say it in their faces. Is there a place for us here, with you? What will your answer be?

34. Nuestro Parroco es el Padre Ed Gros, S.J. Nos recordó que hay que ver a los pobres que vienen de Juárez como Cristo buscando posada. Cuando se celebran lasposadas hay varias puertas donde la Sagrada Familia busca posada y son rechazados, hasta la última, donde son recibidos. Nosotros somos la primera puerta donde buscan refugio, y hay que recibirlos bien.

35. One day in the public life of Jesus, many of his disciples drew back, and no longer went about with him (John 6.66). Jesus looked for the faces of the apostles and asked: “Will you also go away?” Peter answered: “To whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Jesus looks for our faces today and asks the same question: “Will you also go away?” What will your answer be?

36. Un día en la vida publica de Jesús, muchos de sus discípulos se echaron atrás y no se dejaban ver más con él (Juan 6.66). Jesús buscó los rostros de sus Apóstoles y les preguntó: ¿También ustedes quieren marcharse? Simón Pedro se contestó: Señor, y ha quién vamos a ír? Solo tú tienes las palabras de vida eterna. Jesús igualmente busca nuestros rostros hoy y pregunta la misma pregunta: ¿También ustedes quieren marcharse? ¿Cuál será tu respuesta?

37. The good thief, St. Dismas, who was courageous enough to speak for Jesus, found the face of Jesus next to him on the cross. He said: “Jesus, remember me, when you come into your kingdom.” Jesus right away answered. “This day you will be with me in Paradise!”

38. El buen ladrón, San Dísmas, tuvo valor de defender a Jesús clavado en la cruz. Busco su divino rostro y le dijo: “Jesús, acuérdatede mí cuando entres a tu reino!” Jesús inmediatamente le contestó. ¡Este día estarás conmigo en el Paraíso!”

39. “Hide not your face from me, O Lord!” (Psalm 27.9) “¡ No escondas tu rostro de mí, Señor!”(Salmo 27.9).
