Mateo 2:1 - 12

1. Mateo2:1 - 12 1 Jesús nació en Belén de Judá, en tiempos del rey Herodes. Unos magos de oriente llegaron entonces a Jerusalén 2 y preguntaron: “¿Dónde está el rey de los judíos que acaba de nacer? Porque vimos surgir su estrella y hemos venido a adorarlo”. 3 Al enterarse de esto, el rey Herodes se sobresaltó y toda Jerusalén con él.

2. 4 Convocó entonces a los sumos sacerdotes y a los escribas del pueblo y les preguntó dónde tenía que nacer el Mesías. 5 Ellos le contestaron: “En Belén de Judá, porque así lo ha escrito el profeta: 6 Y tú, Belén, tierra de Judá, no eres en manera alguna la menor entre las ciudades ilustres de Judá, pues de ti saldrá un jefe, que será el pastor de mi pueblo, Israel”.

3. 7 Entonces Herodes llamó en secreto a los magos, para que le precisaran el tiempo en que se les había aparecido la estrella 8 y los mandó a Belén, diciéndoles: “Vayan a averiguar cuidadosamente qué hay de ese niño y, cuando lo encuentren, avísenme para que yo también vaya a adorarlo”. 9 Después de oír al rey, los magos se pusieron en camino, y de pronto la estrella que habían visto surgir, comenzó a guiarlos, hasta que se detuvo encima de donde estaba el niño.

4. 10 Al ver de nuevo la estrella, se llenaron de inmensa alegría. 11 Entraron en la casa y vieron al niño con María, su madre, y postrándose, lo adoraron. Después, abriendo sus cofres, le ofrecieron regalos: oro, incienso y mirra. 12 Advertidos durante el sueño de que no volvieran a Herodes, regresaron a su tierra por otro camino.

We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.” 3 When King Herod heard this, he was greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

8. 4 Assembling all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it has been written through the prophet: 6 ‘And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; since from you shall come a ruler, who is to shepherd my people Israel.’ ”

9. 7 Then Herod called the magi secretly and ascertained from them the time of the star’s appearance. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search diligently for the child. When you have found him, bring me word, that I too may go and do him homage.” 9 After their audience with the king they set out. And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was.

10. 10 They were overjoyed at seeing the star, 11 and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their country by another way.

13. Reflections on Matthew 2:1 - 12 Reflexiones en Mateo 2:1 - 12 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. Jan. 5, 2014 Today is the Feast of the Epiphany. It celebrates the visit of the Three Wise Kings to the Infant Jesus. In Greek the word “epiphany” means “higher manifestation.” It speaks about the revelation of God’s love for all humanity. It was not to be limited to the Jews. Let us reflect upon this.

14. Hoy es la Fiesta de la Epifanía. Celebra la visita de los Tres Reyes Magos al Niño Jesús. En Griego la palabra “epifanía” quiere decir “manifestación alta.” Habla de la revelación del amor de Dios para toda la humanidad. No iba a ser limitada a los Judíos. Vamos a reflexionar sobre esto.

15. The three wise kings were called magi because of their knowledge of astrology. They came from the East, a place called Mesopotamia. It was the home of astrology in the Greek world. The star represents nature. However, it was not an ordinary star. St. John Chrysostom (The Gospel of Matthew, Homily 7.3) says this star had a capacity to guide, not merely to move but to beckon, to “go before them”. It drew and guided them along their way. The star remained so that the child might also be seen.

16. Los tres Reyes sabios eran llamados “magos” por su conocimiento de astrología. Venían del Oriente, de un lugar llamado Mesopotamia. En el mundo Griego, era el lugar donde se practicaba la astrología. La estrella representa la naturaleza. Pero no era una estrella ordinaria. San Juan Crisóstomo (El Evangelio de Mateo, Homilía 7.3) dice que esta estrella tenia la capacidad de guiar, y no solo mover, sino que también llamar, y “ir delante de ellos.” Los atraía y los guió por el camino. La estrella permaneció para que se pudiera encontrar el Niño.

17. The kings must have had a special gift of discernment. They figured out that God was doing something great, and it had to do with a king from Israel. They must have been men of prayer. In Persia, where they came from, they were also known as priests of their religion. This all had to do with holiness, and God.

18. Los Reyes han de haber recibido un don especial de discernimiento. Ellos han de haber sido hombres dedicados a la oración. Figuraron que Dios estaba haciendo algo grande, y que tenia que ver con el Rey de Israel. En Persia, de donde venían, los magos de aquellos tiempos también eran reconocidos como los sacerdotes de su religión. Todo esto tenia que ver con la santidad, y con Dios.

19. Had it not been for the star, they would have had a very difficult time finding an answer to their question: “Where is the newly born King of the Jews? ” King Herod asked the chief priests and scribes where the Christ was to be born. They told him: “In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it is written by the prophet (Micah 5:2), ‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will govern my people Israel.’ ”

Si no fuera por la estrella hubieran tenido un tiempo muy difícil encontrar la respuesta a su pregunta: “¿Dónde esta el recién nacido Rey de los Judíos?” El Rey Herodes le pregunto a los jefes sacerdotes y a los escribas donde iba a nacer el Cristo. Le dijeron: “En Belén de Judea; porque así fue escrito por el profeta: (Miqueas 5:2), ‘ Y tu, O Belén, en la tierra de Judea, no eres por ninguna manera la mas pequeña entre los dirigentes de Judá; Porque de ti saldrá un dirigente que ha de gobernar a mi pueblo Israel.’ ”

21. Remember that there was nothing conspicuous about the place where Jesus was born. Bethlehem was a small town. The inn was ordinary. The mother and St. Joseph were not celebrated or notable persons. The star helped to manifest and illumine the lowly place, until they reached their destination at the manger. There was no radio, TV, or newspapers. There were no cell phones.

22. Recuerden que no había nada conspicuo acerca del lugar en el cual Jesús nació. Belén es una pequeña aldea. El lugar de posada era ordinario. Su madre y buen Señor San José no eran personas notables. La estrella ayudo iluminar y manifestar aquel lugar humilde, hasta que llegaron los tres Reyes a su destinación en el pesebre. No había radio, ni televisión, ni periódicos. No había teléfonos celulares.

23. In the Old Testament part of the Bible, God communicated his will by inspiration of the Holy Spirit to the prophets. One of those prophets was Balaam, the son of Beor, in the Book of Numbers 24:17. He foresaw what was to be realized in the time of David the King. This was to be interpreted in the messianic sense. It spoke about what would happen when the messiah (the anointed) would come.

24. En la parte de la Biblia que se llama el Viejo Testamento, Dios comunicaba su voluntad por medio de inspiración por el Espirito Santo a los profetas. Uno de esos profetas fue Balaam, hijo de Beor, en el Libro de Números 24:17. El vio antemano lo que se iba a realizar en el tiempo del Rey David. Esto llego a ser interpretado en el sentido mesiánico. Quiere decir que hablaba de lo que sucedería cuando el Mesías (el ungido) vendría.

25. Balaam said: “I see him but not now; I behold him, but not nigh: a star shall come forth out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel; it shall crush the forehead of Moab.” The story of the Three Wise Kings, the Magi, affirms that Jesus, son of David, as the Messiah, fulfills this prophecy.

26. Balaam dijo: “Lo veo, pero no es ahora; lo contemplo, pero no será pronto. Avanza la estrella de Jacob y sube el cetro de Israel. Triturará la frente de Moab.” La historia de los tres Reyes Magos afirma que Jesús, Hijo de David, es el Mesías, y cumple esta profecía.

27. The Magi found what they were seeking. They rejoiced exceedingly. This joy that God gave them was a special grace of consolation. It confirmed that the burden of such a great journey they had undertaken in faith was not without reason. The early Church Father named Chromatius (Tractate on Matthew 5.1) says that when they recognized he was divine, they immediately fell to their knees and adored the one born as Lord. They perceived one thing with the eyes of their bodies but another with the eyes of their mind. A boy he was, but it is God who is adored.

28. Loa Magos encontraron lo que andaban buscando. Regocijaron grandemente. Este gozo que Dios les concedió fue una gracia especial de consolación. Confirmo que aquella jornada tan larga y tan dura que habían tomado en fe no fue sin razón. El Padre de la Iglesia temprana llamado Chromatius (Tractate Acerca de Mateo 5.1) dice que cuando ellos reconocieron que era divino, inmediatamente cayeron de rodillas y adoraron al nacido como el Señor. Se dieron cuenta de una cosa con los ojos de su cuerpo, pero se dieron cuenta de otra con los ojos de su mente. Era un niño, pero Dios era el que adoraron.

29. The saintly Anglo-Saxon historian the Venerable Bede (c. 700) said: “The magi were the ones who gave gifts to the Lord. The first is said to have been Melchior, an old man with white hair and a long beard… who offered gold to the Lord as king. The second, Gaspar by name, was young and beardless and ruddy complexioned… honored the Baby Jesus as God by his gift of incense, an oblation worthy of divinity. The third, dark skinned and heavily bearded, was named Balthasar… by his gift of myrrh testified to the Son of Man who was to die.”

30. El historiador Anglo-Saxon el Venerable Bede (c. 700) dijo: “ Los magos fueron los que le dieron dones al Señor. El primero se dice que fue llamado Melchor, era un anciano con cabello blanco y una barba larga... que ofreció oro al Señor como a un Rey. El segundo, Gaspar por nombre, era joven y sin barba y rubio... honro al Niño Jesús como Dios por su regalo de incienso, una oblación digna de divinidad. El tercero, de piel morena y barbudo, llamado Baltasar… por su regalo de mirra testifico al Hijo del hombre que iba a morir.”

31. Note the beautiful reading from Isaiah 60:1-6. “Kings will come to the brightness of your rising. Your hearts shall throb and overflow, for the riches of the sea shall be emptied out before you, the wealth of nations shall be brought to you. Caravans of camels shall fill you, dromedaries from Midian and Ephah; all from Sheba shall come. Bearing gold and frankincense, and proclaiming the praises of the Lord.”

32. Noten la bellísima lectura de Isaías 60:1-6. “Los Reyes acudirán al resplandor de tu aurora...entonces lo veras, radiante de alegría; tu corazón palpitara y rebosara. Cuando vuelquen sobre ti los tesoros del mar, y te traigan las riquezas de los pueblos, te inundara una multitud de camellos, de dromedarios de Median y de Efa. Vienen todos de Saba, trayendo incienso y oro, y proclamando las alabanzas del Señor.”

33. The power of Jesus the King of the Jews begins to be manifested. He has the power to move the hearts of men. He is at the center of all creation. The stars are at his service. The wise men, with their great faith, read the signs of the times. God spoke to them through that star. They were moved to seek, to ask, to dialogue. They were open to the Mystery of God. They left everything in search of an answer. As a result they found Jesus-God incarnate.

34. El poder de Jesús el Rey de los Judíos se comienza a manifestar. Él tiene el poder de mover los corazones de los hombres. Él esta al centro de la creación. Las estrellas están a su servicio. Los Magos, con su gran fe, leyeron los signos de los tiempos. Dios les hablo por medio de la estrella. Fueron conmovidos a buscar, a preguntar, y dialogar. Estaban abiertos al Misterio de Dios. Dejaron todo en búsqueda de una respuesta. Como resultado encontraron a Jesús-Dios encarnado.

35. It is our turn to read the signs of the times. Where is Jesus to be found today? How is his power manifested? Has your heart been moved? Do you feel great joy like them? Is he calling you to make some sacrifice for his greater honor and glory? We note that the Magi were ready to leave everything, to seek, to ask, to dialogue. There is much to be said for that. O come let us adore him!

36. Ahora nos toca leer los signos de nuestros tiempos. ¿Donde se encuentra Jesús hoy? ¿Como se manifiesta su poder? ¿Ha conmovido tu corazón? ¿Sientes gran gozo como ellos? ¿Te esta llamando a hacer algún sacrificio para su honor y gloria? Notamos que los Magos estaban listos para dejarlo todo, y buscar, y preguntar, y dialogar. Hay mucho que decir a favor de eso. ¡Vamos a adorarlo!
