  2. Why is EU Sustainable Development Research Important? Sustainable Development EU Constitutional and Political Objective • SD one of the primary aims of the European Constitution • SD subsumed in the Lisbon Strategy

Why is EU Sustainable Development Research Important? • Common EU objectives regarding SD • Similar situation related to SD in EU member/new member/candidate countries • Common challenges related to SD facing EU member/candidate countries • Common EU-wide environmental/SD legislation, regulations requiring action by member states • EU supported and coordinated SD research can give maximum added value to SD implementation Research = Knowledge

Strengthening National Capacity for Sustainable Development • SD must be implemented within the local political and cultural context • SD “solutions” developed in one place cannot be directly transferred elsewhere • Local/national capacity for SD must be strengthened both for SD content and SD implementation process

Strengthening National Capacity for Sustainable Development • Important thatSD knowledge and skills should be acquired locally by those working in knowledge generation and transfer - researchers and educators TOGETHER WITH target audiences/users of knowledge - local/national government institutions - manufacturing enterprises etc.

Strengthening National Capacity for Sustainable Development • EU funded SD research an opportunity for Baltic States researchers to generate/acquire SD knowledge in cooperation with researchers/end users throughout EU and beyond • Participation rate of Baltic States researchers in EU SD research is one measure of capacity building towards SD
