Joint Call for Proposals with Czech Academy of Sciences

Joint Mobility Agreement This is specific to the Czech Academy of Sciences member institutes 5 year agreement to identify and support jointly selected research projects The primary mechanism of support will be funding for joint mobility projects – each partner supports their component Other cooperation activities that support mutual exchange of information, networking, etc. may also be pursued through separate written agreements. Program Objectives • Improve scientific cooperation between UofM and CAS • Stimulate involvement of young researchers and PhD students in research of joint interest • Support research teams aspiring to cooperate on large international projects in the future • Enable use of methodology, infrastructure and equipment for mutual benefit

Proposal Eligibility/Guidance • All research fields of the CAS are eligible • Individuals may only be involved in only one project per competition cycle • Each Research team members are categorized into four divisions: 1)Senior researchers (5 or more years post PhD; 2) Junior researchers OR PostDocs (less than 5 years from PhD); 3) PhD Students; 4) Others (e.g. engineers, technicians, etc). • At least 1/3 of the team members must be junior researchers/PostDocs or PhD students • Maximum project duration is 3 years; no cost extension is NOT permitted • Projects will begin on January 1, 2020 and end no later than December 31, 2022

Financial Conditions/Budget Provide up to $12,500 USD to support up to 2 (two) three-year joint mobility projects within each call for proposals • Eligible costs and budget % include: • Mobility costs – maximum of 50% of budget for travel, living expenses ($6,250/year) • Research costs – minimum of 40% of budget for consumables, services, small equipment, software, international communication & data exchange cost (e.g. phone, cloud storage,virtual meeting, and postage, etc.) ($5,000/yr) • Non-eligible costs: personnel, capital equipment (exceeding $5,000 USD/unit), indirect costs.

  6. Submission/Evaluation Process • Joint proposals will be submitted by each side; content will be identical, except for budget forms. • UofM researchers will submit proposals via e-mail to Research Development • Deadline for submissions is May 31, 2019 • Each organization will evaluate and rank proposals no later than August 31, 2019 • UofM and CAS will negotiate final ranking and approve selected proposals for funding by September 30, 2019. • Award notification will take place in October for project start dates of January 1, 2020.

Proposal Content • 1100 character abstract (including spaces) submitted in English and Czech • Maximum 3 page project description (in English only) • Expected/Intended results and benefits, broader impact • Scientific importance and originality of the project, current state-of-the-art in the field (including relevant literature) • Methods and approaches • Activities and outputs/outcomes planned for each year of the project • Maximum 1.5 page description of research team • Qualifications, relevant previous cooperation, compatibility and complementarity of personnel, methods, and instrumentation • Role of each team member • Participation of junior researchers/Postdocs and PhD students

Proposal Content Cont…. • Form that identifies and categorizes US and Czech Principal Investigator, along with team members by category (senior researchers, junior researchers/ postdocs, PhD students, Others) • Academic CV of US Principal Investigator (1 page) that lists a maximum of 5 relevant publications • Budget form that Identifies Costs by year and Other Sources of Funding
