  1. RANGITIKEI COLLEGE • DEVELOPING A SUSTAINABLE MENTORING PROGRAMME FOR LIFE LONG LEARNING

  2. NOT ALL FLOWERS IN THE GARDEN ARE THE SAME, SOME NEED MORE WATERING THAN OTHERS .

  3. In the beginning • Survey of PRTs - using information from current PRTs and ex PRTs (from 3 to 4years) • Discussions amongst the mentors regarding their experiences being and leading PRTs

  4. Where did we start • PRT’s Survey - present and past • HODs as a Mentors (what is required of us) • Start the development of a Sustainable programme for Mentors and PRTs • Where do single person departments fit into our school programme?

  5. PRTs survey summary • Had not seen schedule. Meetings haven’t happened as per schedule. • Meetings could be rescheduled to have greater focus on these things at beginning of year : • Several PRTs would like to see the same staff running meetings (they find it frustrating having so many different people involved in the meetings – feel it leads to a lack of clear direction). Would like it to be attended only by relevant people (so discussions can be frank etc without worrying about senior teachers, other than PRT coordinator, who are there). • PRT2s need different programme to PRT1s / New Teachers (some ideas need to be same but a lot don’t). • PRTs who start partway through the year still need the content which is covered prior to their arrival. Support needed. • Other ideas for meetings: • Motivating students. • Appraisal booklet and goal setting (early in year).

  7. Rangitikei College PRT Programme Term 3 2009 • The PRT Programme for Term 3 is as follows. The meetings will take place in A1 at 3.20pm on Tuesdays. Meeting agendas and ‘things to bring’ will be given to you prior to meetings as necessary. Please record any questions you may have prior to these meetings below and bring this to each meeting so it can be signed (this can then be used for registration purposes).

  9. Mentors WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE MENTOR For us in 2009 this meant two new HODs to our school were involved in the pilot, as well as a new PRT co-ordinator. Becoming familiar with the school as well as their role as a mentor

  10. Mentors Everyone needs someone to light the way Implemented as part of our school wide procedures Developing a mentoring handbook for HODs What is required of mentors for them to ensure a positive programme is delivered? Our school HODs as mentors

  11. First meeting • Induction chat between PRTs and Mentors, expectations for fitness of use for both the Mentors and the PRTs • PRTs strengths and weakness identified • (reviewed regularly)

  12. Where to now Meeting schedules were developed and linked to areas which arose from the feedback and the delivery of the programme (ensuring all PRTs had a copy) The programme schedule was looked at in terms of timing of events within the school E.g. Beginning of year (set up and students management system) Class protocols Reports Registration folders/reflections

  13. Registration folders/reflections • Staffing and consistency in the delivery of the programme (this was a school issue which needed to be address along side management for the positive implementation of an effective programme) • The separation of the Year 1 & 2 programme and a programme which is fluid between one year to the next.

  14. Mentoring • Establishing and explaining roles within the process. • Factors which may contribute to mentoring barriers (no blame, just understanding). • Strengths of the mentors and other staff taken into account.

  15. Do you see what I see? • Using observation as a tool • Learning how to observe and asking the different levels of questioning • Actively listening • Self assessment tools used as a question and reflection task. • End of year survey of each PRT

  16. Self assessment tool

  17. Into the future • Continued review, development and implementation of the revised PRT programme. • On going development linked to the new teacher criteria • Using the SATs as a supporting document for guided life long learning • Mentors handbook reviewed and up dated when required
